Chapter 9 - THE SHADOW OF THE PASTSpring turned into a brilliant Chicago summer.

The transition of the Kane Hospitality Group was finalized on a warm Tuesday in June, broadcasted live across financial news networks nationwide. For the first time in a decade, a Kane stepped in front of the cameras not as a reclusive, bitter recluse, but as a visionary leader standing side-by-side with the woman who had helped him reclaim his empire.
From her seat in the front row of the press auditorium, Nova watched her sister speak to a battery of flashing cameras and microphones. Odessa wore a crisp, elegant navy suit, her posture unyielding, her voice calm, powerful, and utterly unfazed by the spotlight.
"A great hotel is not defined by the marble in its lobby or the cost of its linens," Odessa said into the banks of microphones, her words echoing across the nation. "It is defined by the dignity of the people who keep its doors open when no one is watching."
Back in the executive suite, watching the live stream on a large monitor, Theo listened with a quiet, satisfied smile.
The empire was safe. The corruption had been scrubbed clean.
But as the broadcast faded to commercial, the private security phone on Theo’s mahogany desk buzzed with a short, sharp ring.
Theo reached out, his long fingers finding the receiver with absolute precision.
"Kane," he answered.
"Mr. Kane," a calm, unfamiliar voice spoke from the other end of the line—a voice carrying a subtle foreign accent that didn't belong to any Chicago executive. "Please forgive the intrusion. But I believe there is a very important conversation we need to have regarding the overseas assets your father transferred out of Zurich twenty-five years ago. Assets your former board members didn't even know existed."
Theo’s jaw tightened. The calm in the room shifted instantly into razor-sharp alertness.
"Who is this?" Theo demanded, his voice dropping into ice.

"Call it... an interested party," the voice replied smoothly. "And tell your new Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Callaway, that the game isn't quite over yet."
The line went dead with a sharp click.
