Chapter 3 - The Family AuditMarcus walked past Dominic without sparing him a glance, stopping beside Julian and giving his younger brother a brief, reassuring nod. He then turned his attention to Eleanor, whose face had gone chalk white.

“Mom. I always knew you were ruthless when it came to the company holdings, but stooping to fabricate a medical incompetence claim against a new mother in a hospital suite? That’s a new low, even for you,” Marcus said smoothly, tapping the screen of his tablet.

“Marcus, put that away. This is an internal family dispute. You have no jurisdiction here,” Eleanor hissed, stepping forward as if she could physically block her eldest son from the technology.

“Actually, I do,” Marcus replied, holding up the tablet so the timestamp and audio waveform were visible. “Section 12 of the healthcare facility compliance act treats unauthorized coercion and document falsification within a restricted medical ward as a federal offense, especially when it involves minors and premeditated manipulation of incapacitated individuals. I’ve already forwarded copies to the district attorney’s office and hospital security.”

Dominic’s professional composure completely dissolved. He dropped the leather folder onto the rolling tray, the papers sliding out across the laminate surface. “Eleanor, you told me this was pre-approved by both parties! You said Clara had verbally agreed to temporary placement!”

“Don’t you dare try to shift the blame, Dominic!” Eleanor whipped around, her carefully curated elegance completely disintegrating into panic-fueled fury. “You’re the one who drew up the contingency clauses! You told me how to bypass the immediate notification window!”

“Oh, so it was premeditated,” Marcus noted mildly, tapping a record button on his tablet. “Keep talking, guys. The audio quality on this room monitor is phenomenal. You can hear every word over the HVAC hum.”

Julian stared at his mother, the realization of her manipulation crushing the last remnants of his filial loyalty. For years, Julian had excused Eleanor’s controlling nature as grief over the loss of their father. He had believed her when she claimed she only wanted what was best for the family. But watching her throw her own legal counsel under the bus the second things went south made it blindingly clear: Eleanor Vance loved power, control, and money far more than she loved her own children or grandchild.

“Get out,” Julian said. His voice wasn’t loud. It didn’t boom or shake with artificial theatrics. It was flat, cold, and absolute.

Eleanor froze, staring at her favorite son—the one she had groomed to take over the Vance corporate empire. “Julian… what did you say?”

“I said, get out of this room. Right now.” Julian stepped away from Clara’s bed, advancing toward his mother with a dark, towering presence that forced Eleanor to step backward out into the hallway. “And don’t ever come near my wife or my daughter again. If you or Dominic so much as attempt to contact us, I won’t just let Marcus handle it—I’ll personally see to it that every asset you hold is frozen under federal investigation.”

“You are making the biggest mistake of your life!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing down the sterile hospital corridor as hospital staff began to peek out from neighboring doors. “You think you can survive without the Vance portfolio? You’ll be ruined! Both of you!”

“Better ruined and free than living in a cage you built,” Julian said, and slammed the heavy oak door right in her face.

The lock clicked into place with a heavy, satisfying thud.
