Chapter 1 - The Cold AwakeningThe blue and red lights of the police cruisers painted the falling snow in a violent, chaotic strobe.

Hannah was already inside the ambulance, wrapped in thermal blankets, an oxygen mask hissing softly over her face as paramedics worked frantically to stabilize her core body temperature. Her heart rate was stabilizing, but the medical examiner's preliminary note—hypothermia stage two, defensive bruising on the left forearm—was enough to make my blood run colder than the winter air.

I stood by the edge of the driveway, the brass buttons of my service uniform reflecting the flashing emergency lights.

My mother, Eleanor, stood on the porch wrapped in her expensive cashmere coat, her face twisted in utter disbelief and indignation. Beside her, Paige was shivering, not from the cold, but from sheer, unadulterated panic.

"Lucas, have you lost your absolute mind?" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cutting through the wail of the ambulance siren. "Calling the police on your own family? Over a stubborn, ungrateful little brat who throws tantrums in the yard? She wanted attention! She wanted to ruin your homecoming!"

I didn’t answer immediately. I slowly walked toward them, my boots crunching rhythmically on the icy gravel. The silence I carried wasn't the silence of submission anymore; it was the heavy, suffocating quiet of a loaded weapon.

"Mom," I said, my voice dangerously low. "You locked her out. In sub-zero temperatures. Without shoes. While you sat inside eating off my father’s wedding china."

"It’s my house!" Paige screamed, taking a step forward, her finger jabbing aggressively into the empty air. "Dad left it to Mom! We can do whatever we want with the hired help—and that’s all Hannah ever was! A gold-digging parasite who trapped you while you were overseas!"

At that exact moment, a sleek black sedan crunched up the unplaved driveway.

The door opened, and Mason Ward stepped out. He was impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, briefcase in hand, looking like an executioner stepping onto a battlefield.

"Ah, Mrs. Sterling and Paige," Mason said smoothly, his eyes cold behind his wire-rimmed glasses. "I see you're still enjoying the hospitality of a home you no longer own."

Eleanor scoffed, regaining a sliver of her arrogant posture. "Don't talk nonsense, Mason. My husband’s will left everything to me. Get these cops off my property before I have you disbarred."

Mason didn't blink. He reached into his briefcase, pulled out a thick, bound document stamped with official seals, and flipped it open to a highlighted page.

"Your husband, Arthur Sterling, amended his estate planning forty-eight hours before Lucas deployed," Mason announced, his voice carrying clearly across the yard. "The house, the bank accounts, the assets, and the land—they were placed into an irrevocable family trust. Total ownership was assigned to Lucas as Trustee, with Hannah Sterling as the sole primary beneficiary."

Paige’s face drained of every drop of color. "That... that’s impossible. Dad told us..."

"Your father," Mason interrupted coldly, "realized you both were bleeding his accounts dry and plotting to throw Hannah out the moment he passed. He signed these documents in front of two independent witnesses and a judge."

Two police officers stepped up behind Eleanor and Paige, the metallic click of handcuffs sounding like a death knell in the quiet night.

"Eleanor Sterling. Paige Sterling," the lead officer said, pulling out a small notepad. "You are being placed under arrest for domestic abuse, reckless endangerment, and criminal trespassing."

"You can't do this!" Eleanor shrieked as cold steel snapped around her wrists, her pristine facade finally shattering completely. "Lucas! I am your mother! You cannot throw your own family out for a stranger!"

"She isn't a stranger," I said, turning my back on them as the cruisers began to reverse. "She is my wife. And your eviction starts tonight."
