Chapter 2 - THE DIGITAL NOOSE TIGHTENSI kept the video playing, my thumb resting steadily on my mouse pad as the date shifted to December 30th.

The hallway camera captured Ethan walking out of the nursery at two in the morning, shivering in his oversized sweatshirt, clutching a half-empty bottle of warm tap water because the formula had run out hours earlier. He looked so fragile, so desperately alone, pacing back and forth in the freezing hallway while trying to muffle Noah’s desperate, hungry cries so he wouldn't wake the empty rooms.

Then came the audio of a phone call on Eleanor’s landline phone—which routed directly into my security logs.

Ethan had managed to find an old tablet and FaceTime his grandmother, begging her to come back because the apartment heating had dropped and the baby wouldn't stop shivering.

Eleanor’s voice blasted through my speakers, sharp and irritated: "Ethan, stop whining! I told you, we are celebrating. If you can't handle a simple baby, maybe you should think about how much trouble you cause your family. Do not call this number again tonight. Be a man and deal with it."

The screen went black as Ethan silently hung up, wiping a stray tear from his cheek before heading back into the freezing nursery.

I didn't blink. I didn't curse. The anger inside me had burned so hot and bright that it had transformed into something cold, clear, and lethal.

My fingers flew across the keyboard. I exported the raw video files, backing them up to three separate cloud storage locations and my corporate server in Stuttgart. I attached a detailed digital ledger of every unauthorized bank transfer, every text message directive commanding Ethan to remain silent, and every minute of audio negligence.

I opened a new email draft addressed directly to Captain Thomas Miller of the NYPD 84th Precinct—an old college acquaintance who specialized in financial fraud and domestic abandonment cases.

“Captain Miller,” I typed, my voice steady as I dictated the message into my phone. “I have proof of child endangerment, gross neglect, and grand larceny involving two minors. The suspects are currently residing at the Plaza Hotel under fraudulent pretenses using stolen funds. Here is the evidence. Please execute a warrant immediately.”
