Chapter 4 - THE MORNING AFTER THE FEASTFor five seconds, there was silence inside the suite. Then came the sound of rustling sheets, a muffled curse, and heavy footsteps padding across the carpet.

The door swung open.
There stood Mark, my sister Rachel’s husband, wearing a silk hotel bathrobe, his hair sticking up in every direction, holding a half-empty glass of expensive sparkling wine. His eyes were bloodshot, bloated from a night of heavy drinking and caviar.
“What the hell do you want?” Mark barked, blinking heavily against the bright hallway lights. “Do you know who we are? We’re guests of—ops!”
Mark stopped dead in his tracks as Captain Miller flashed his gold badge right in front of his face, while two uniformed officers stepped past him into the suite.
“New York Police Department. Step aside, sir,” Miller commanded, pushing past a stunned Mark.
“What is the meaning of this?!” a sharp, haughty voice shrieked from the master bedroom.
My mother, Eleanor, emerged wearing a plush white bathrobe with the Plaza logo stitched into the chest, her face caked in remnants of last night’s expensive makeup. Behind her, Rachel stumbled out of the bedroom, clutching a silk eye mask, looking furious and disheveled.
“Mom? Rachel? Enjoying the suite?”
My voice cut through the opulent room like a razor blade.

Eleanor froze midway across the sitting area. Her jaw dropped open, color instantly draining from her face as she saw me standing in the doorway flanked by police officers.
“D-David?” Eleanor stammered, grabbing onto the back of a velvet sofa for support. “What are you doing here? How did you find us? You’re supposed to be in Germany for another week!”
