Chapter 6 - THE CUFFS GO ON“You can’t arrest us!” Eleanor screamed, dropping all pretense of maternal dignity as she lunged forward, her hands clawing at the air. “I am his mother! I raised him! You owe me everything you have, David! You ungrateful, cold-hearted monster!”

Captain Miller didn’t flinch. He signaled to the two officers behind him.

“Eleanor Varrick and Rachel Vance,” Miller recited formally, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt, “you are under arrest for felony child endangerment, reckless endangerment of minors, and grand larceny.”

“No! Get away from me! Don't touch me!” Eleanor shrieked as Officer Vance grabbed her wrists and spun her around, clicking the cuffs tight around her aged wrists. Her expensive white bathrobe slipped off her shoulder as she struggled against the restraint, her face twisted in pure, unadulterated malice.

Rachel tried to run toward the bedroom, but the second officer intercepted her instantly, grabbing her arm and forcing her hands behind her back.

“Mark Vance!” Miller called out, turning his sharp gaze toward my brother-in-law. “You’re coming with us too as an accessory to financial fraud and abandonment.”

“Wait, wait, wait! I didn't touch the money! Rachel managed the accounts!” Mark pleaded, his hands raised in surrender as the third officer slapped cuffs on his wrists.

“You stood there and approved it, Mark,” I said, walking slowly toward them as the police escorted my family toward the suite door. “That makes you just as guilty.”

As they were led out into the plush nineteenth-floor hallway, Eleanor turned her head back, her eyes blazing with pure venom. “You’ll regret this, David! You’ll never see a dime of our forgiveness! We’ll ruin you in court!”

“You don’t have any money left to hire a lawyer, Mom,” I replied quietly. “I froze every account you share access to an hour after I found Ethan. Enjoy your stay in holding.”

The heavy mahogany door clicked shut, leaving me standing alone in the silent, opulent suite.
