Chapter 3 - The Golden ParasiteTo understand why Julian felt so untouchable, you had to understand the house of cards our parents built.

Growing up, Julian was the golden boy. He had Dad’s charming smile, Mom’s effortless knack for charm, and an absolute aversion to hard work. While I spent my nights in college pulling double-majors in corporate finance and business law while working part-time at a law firm, Julian majored in "networking" and racked up fraternity debts that Dad quietly covered by remortgaging our childhood home.
When Julian decided to marry Chloe Sterling—a woman whose family claimed old-money roots in Connecticut but whose actual bank accounts were as hollow as a hollow chocolate bunny—our parents went into a frenzy.
"The Vances must maintain our standing!" Mom had declared over Sunday dinner three months ago. "Julian is marrying into elite circles. We cannot look poor, Evelyn!"
So they tapped me.
"You’re making partner, darling," Dad had said, patting my hand with the condescension of a feudal lord. "A hundred thousand is pocket change for someone with your trajectory. Think of it as your wedding gift to your brother. It’s an investment in family prestige."
I had hesitated. I had pointed out that my own savings were earmarked for a commercial real estate acquisition.
"Family helps family," Mom had snapped, her eyes turning cold and glassy whenever I resisted. "If you don't support your brother, you're dead to this family."
Fear of exclusion is a powerful chain, especially when you’ve spent your whole life trying to earn love that was conditional on your utility. For months, I paid for the five-tier French vanilla cake. I paid for the 500 imported hydrangeas flown in from Holland. I paid the retainer for the celebrity photographer who charged more per hour than a heart surgeon.
And how did Julian repay me?
By sending a text message while high on the fumes of his own impending grandeur, thinking my utility had expired.
My phone buzzed again. It was a screenshot forwarded from a cousin. It was Julian’s Instagram story: a picture of him holding a glass of vintage champagne at an exclusive bachelor lounge, captioned: “Surrounded by real ones. No parasites allowed.”

The comment section was filled with adoring hearts from our relatives. My mother had commented: “So proud of my handsome groom! Only the best for our boy.”
I saved the screenshot. Evidence #1 for tomorrow's masterclass in reality.
