CHAPTER 3: THE WOLF'S FINAL GIFT

The trucks stopped.
Men stepped out.
Some carried rifles.
Others carried chains.
Max moved closer to his grandfather.
Walter quickly hid the notebook beneath his jacket.
Thomas Reed approached calmly.
Too calmly.
"What a surprise," he said.
Walter didn't answer.
Thomas's eyes narrowed.
"I believe you've found something that belongs to me."
The forest became silent.
Even the birds stopped singing.
Walter finally spoke.
"No. It belongs to Ethan."
For a brief second, Thomas's expression changed.
Then it hardened.
"Give me the journal."
"No."
Thomas sighed.
"You should have stayed out of old business."
The men behind him began moving forward.
Max felt fear grip his chest.
There was nowhere to run.
But suddenly something unexpected happened.
The wounded wolf struggled to its feet.
Its injured leg shook violently.
Yet it placed itself directly between the family and the armed men.
The poachers hesitated.
The wolf growled.
Not with fear.
With determination.
As if protecting the people who had tried to help it.
Then a second howl echoed through the forest.
Followed by another.
And another.
Thomas's face turned pale.
From every direction wolves emerged from the trees.
A whole pack.
Silent.
Watching.
The men panicked.
Some dropped their weapons.
Others ran back toward the trucks.
At that exact moment police sirens echoed in the distance.
Earlier, while Walter had been reading the notebook, Max had secretly used his phone to call emergency services and send their location.
Within minutes officers arrived.
The journal was handed over.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Investigators reopened Ethan's case.
Hidden burial sites were discovered.
Old crimes surfaced.
Several former accomplices confessed.
Thomas Reed was arrested.
The town was stunned.
The respected businessman had been hiding a dark secret for decades.
Weeks later, Ethan's remains were finally recovered and given a proper burial.
For the first time in thirty years, his family found peace.
As for the wolf, veterinarians treated its injured paw.
It survived.
And after recovering, it was released back into the forest.
On the day of its release, Max and Walter stood watching from a distance.
The wolf paused.
Turned.
And looked directly at them one last time.
Then disappeared among the trees.
Walter smiled through tears.
"Sometimes," he said quietly, "heroes don't walk on two legs."
Max nodded.
Because if that wounded wolf hadn't protected Ethan's secret for thirty years...
The truth would have remained buried forever.

And somewhere deep within the forest, justice would never have found its way home.
