Chapter 1 - THE BLOOD ON THE PAPERThe bracelet burned against Nathan’s hand like a physical flame. 2018. The year Sarah had walked out of his life. The year he had convinced himself she was nothing more than an ungrateful, money-hungry sister who had chosen a monster over her own blood. He had built a fortress of stone, glass, and multi-million-dollar solitude on the highest peak of Cascade Ridge to keep the memory of her from bleeding into his structured world.

Now, her blood was on his porch.

"Dr. Pierce, the paramedics!" Rosa’s panicked voice shattered his paralysis. "The storm—the dispatcher says the mountain road is completely blocked by an avalanche! Emergency vehicles can’t get up the ridge for at least three hours!"

Nathan’s medical instincts surged over his grief. Three hours meant death.

"Get my emergency surgical kit from the study!" Nathan ordered, his voice shifting instantly into the calm, terrifying precision of a top-tier surgeon. "Bring every heat pack in the house, sterile saline, and the heated blanket system from my bedroom. Move, Rosa!"

He dropped beside the three shivering souls on his plush, cream-colored rug. Owen and Ethan—the twins—were cyanotic. Their little lips were purple, their heart rates dangerously slow. But it was Lily who made his own breath catch in his throat. Her skin was marble-white, her breath a ghostly whisper that hitched every few seconds.

As Nathan peeled away the wet, icy rags wrapped around the five-year-old girl, something fell from the inner lining of her tiny coat. A plastic-wrapped bundle, sealed crude and tight with thick duct tape.

With trembling, gloved hands, Nathan sliced the tape open. Inside were two items: a folded sheet of hospital stationary, covered in smeared black ink, and a heavily encrypted thumb drive wrapped in a zip-top bag.

Nathan unfolded the paper. Sarah’s handwriting, frantic and slanted, stared back at him:

Nathan,

If you are reading this, I am already dead. Marcus didn't just spend your money seven years ago—he stole your identity. He ran a black-market pharmaceutical trafficking ring using your medical license, your signature, and your DEA number. Every illegal shipment of opioids through the Pacific Northwest bears YOUR name. I found the ledger tonight. He realized what I knew. He’s coming for the children because they are the only bargaining chips he has left against the cartel. Do not trust the police in King County. Marcus controls the Sheriff. Protect my babies, Nathan. Forgive me. Please.

Nathan’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth groaned. Seven years of hatred, seven years of believing Sarah had stolen fifty thousand dollars from his bank account and run off with Marcus Kane—it was all a frame job. Marcus had robbed him, ruined his sister, and turned Nathan’s own arrogance into a weapon against his own family.

Suddenly, a weak, icy hand clutched at Nathan’s sleeve.

Lily opened her green eyes. She looked directly into her uncle’s face, her chest heaving as she fought for oxygen.

"Uncle Nathan..." she wheezed, her small frame convulsing with a violent shivering fit. "The bad man... he followed us up the mountain. He saw the lights..."

Before Nathan could answer, the security system throughout the five-thousand-square-foot mansion chimed twice.

Nathan shot a glance at the floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Through the howling fury of the blizzard, two sets of headlights cut through the darkness, slowly crawling past the broken iron gates.

Marcus Kane had arrived.
