Chapter 1 - The Stranger on the ThresholdThe brass doorknob turned with a cold, metallic click, and the heavy oak door swung inward, revealing a figure standing in the fading evening light.

It wasn’t Blake. It wasn’t a paramedic.

It was Elena Vance.

For a fraction of a second, my oxygen-starved brain struggled to recognize her. Elena lived three houses down, a quiet, observant woman in her late forties whom I had only ever exchanged polite waves with across manicured lawns. But tonight, her eyes weren’t fixed on the neighborhood landscaping—they were locked entirely on me, sprawled across the hardwood floor in a pool of water and blood, my fingers clawed desperately into the base of the living room sofa.

“Oh, sweet mother of God,” Elena gasped, dropping her grocery bags instantly. The sound of plastic containers hitting the floor echoed loudly in the silent house.

In three rapid strides, she was kneeling beside me. Her hands, warm and remarkably steady, hovered over my shaking shoulders before gently cupping my face.

“Can you hear me? Look at me,” she commanded, her voice cutting through the ringing in my ears like a beacon of light.

“My… my twins,” I choked out, a sob tearing its way up my throat as another contraction ripped through my abdomen, doubling me over with agonizing violence. “They’re coming. The door… Blake locked me in.”

Elena’s face transformed in a millisecond. The initial shock vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, absolute fury as her gaze swept the room—noticing the deadbolt thrown from the outside, my abandoned, out-of-reach phone lying a foot away, and the undeniable signs of an imminent, unattended birth.

“That miserable coward,” she hissed under her breath. But she didn’t waste a single second on useless anger.

“Listen to me,” Elena ordered, her tone shifting into one of fierce, tactical command. “I’m an ER nurse, and you are in active, advanced labor. We are not waiting for an ambulance. I am going to get you onto that sofa, and we are bringing these babies into the world right now, together.”

As she slid her arms beneath me to lift my trembling body, the front door rattled violently behind us, accompanied by the smug, careless sound of a key sliding into the lock.

Diane’s shrill, impatient voice pierced through the wood.

“Honestly, Elena, you wouldn’t believe the parking at the mall today! Blake, unlock the damn door—your wife’s probably in there pouting because I wouldn’t buy her a coffee.”

The deadbolt slid back with a sickening pop.

Elena stopped dead, her eyes flashing dangerously as she looked toward the entryway. She slowly rose to her feet, blocking the doorway just as the door swung wide open, revealing Blake, Diane, and Chloe standing in the hallway, loaded down with oversized shopping bags from high-end luxury stores.

Blake stepped across the threshold, a lazy, annoyed scowl plastered across his face.

“Alright, Sarah, playtime is over. Mom got her handbag, and—what the hell?”

Blake stopped mid-sentence. His eyes traveled from Elena’s fierce stance to the floor behind her—to the blood, the water, and my agonizing, semi-conscious form crumpled against the sofa.

The shopping bags slipped from his hands, spilling expensive designer boxes across the floor as the color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost.
