Chapter 6 - The Tiger UnchainedThe custody hearing took place exactly one month after the twins were born.

The courtroom was quiet, save for the scratching of the judge’s pen and the heavy, ragged breathing of Blake sitting across the aisle. He looked defeated, his posture completely collapsed, wearing an ill-fitting suit that seemed too large for his shrunken frame. Diane sat beside him, shooting venomous glares in my direction every few seconds until the bailiff sharply told her to quiet down.
My lawyer, a formidable woman named Sandra Vance—Elena’s sister—laid out our case with clinical, devastating precision.
She presented the police reports, Elena’s medical testimony, the emergency dispatch logs, and, finally, the string of abusive text messages Diane had sent me just days prior, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Diane exercised total psychological control over Blake and posed a direct, toxic threat to the emotional well-being of the infants.
When the judge finally looked up from the stack of documents, his expression was carved from granite.
“Mr. Sterling,” the judge addressed Blake directly, his voice echoing coldly through the silent courtroom. “In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely encountered a display of such profound negligence, cowardice, and emotional abuse. You abandoned your wife in a high-risk medical emergency, locked her inside against her will, and prioritized retail shopping over human life.”
Blake slumped forward, burying his face in his hands, letting out a muffled, desperate sob.
“Furthermore,” the judge continued, turning his gaze toward Diane before snapping back to Blake, “the evidence presented demonstrates an overwhelmingly toxic domestic environment heavily influenced by third-party interference that actively endangers these children.”
The judge picked up his gavel, and the sharp crack sounded like a gunshot.
“Sole legal and physical custody of the minors is hereby granted exclusively to the mother, Sarah Sterling. Visitation rights for the father are denied indefinitely, pending court-mandated psychological evaluations, anger management courses, and supervised visitation terms that will not commence for at least twelve months. Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is issued protecting the mother and children from both Blake Sterling and Diane Sterling. Court adjourned.”

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for a month.
As I walked out of the courtroom, flanked by my parents and my lawyer, Blake didn't try to follow me. He just sat at the defense table, completely shattered, staring blankly into space while his mother furiously whispered in his ear, entirely blind to the fact that her own poison had destroyed everything.
