CHAPTER 2 — The Groom Canceled the Wedding… Then His Mother Played a Recording That Sent the Entire Garden Into Panic

No one dared breathe.

The luxurious garden, moments earlier filled with music and champagne toasts, had become as silent as a courtroom awaiting a verdict.

Santiago stood protectively beside his mother, his suit jacket draped over her soaked shoulders.

His eyes never left Daniela.

The woman he had planned to marry in less than an hour.

The woman who had just humiliated his mother in front of everyone.

Daniela forced a shaky smile.

"Santiago... I didn't know it was your mother."

Her voice was soft now.

Fragile.

Completely different from the cruel confidence she'd shown only moments before.

"If I'd recognized her—"

"You would have done what?" Santiago interrupted.

"Used warm water?"

A nervous ripple passed through the guests.

No one laughed this time.

Daniela reached for his hand.

"Please... everyone is watching."

Santiago stepped back before she could touch him.

"I know."

His voice echoed across the garden.

"And I want every single person here to keep watching."

Patricia Robles hurried forward, forcing a smile that looked more like a grimace.

"This is all a misunderstanding."

She turned toward Elena.

"We sincerely apologize. We simply thought—"

"You thought poor people deserved humiliation," Elena replied calmly.

"No," Patricia insisted.

"We were protecting the party."

Elena tilted her head.

"Protecting it from what?"

Patricia couldn't answer.

The silence said enough.

Near the buffet tables, the young waiter Mateo remained frozen, expecting to be fired.

Instead, Elena smiled warmly.

"What is your full name, son?"

"Mateo Hernández."

"How long have you worked here?"

"Eight months, ma'am."

"Were you the only person who offered me help?"

Mateo lowered his eyes.

"I... I couldn't just watch."

Elena nodded.

"Kindness is becoming rare."

She turned toward the banquet manager.

"From this moment forward, Mr. Hernández no longer works for this catering company."

Mateo's face turned white.

"I understand..."

Before he could finish, Elena continued.

"He now works for Salgado International."

The guests gasped.

"Our company has always had room for people with integrity."

Tears filled Mateo's eyes.

"I don't know what to say."

"Then don't."

Elena smiled.

"Just never change."

Across the garden, Daniela clenched her fists so tightly that her manicure dug into her palms.

Things were slipping out of her control.

Fast.

Trying to regain everyone's attention, Daniela suddenly laughed.

"So this is all because of a little misunderstanding?"

She looked around at the guests.

"We're going to ruin an entire wedding because someone wore a disguise?"

Several people nodded uncertainly.

It sounded reasonable.

For a moment.

Then Elena slowly reached into her worn handbag.

"I disguised my appearance."

She pulled out a waterproof pouch.

"But I never disguised the truth."

Inside was her phone.

She unlocked it.

Pressed play.

The speakers connected automatically to the mansion's outdoor sound system.

Daniela's own voice exploded across the garden.

"Beggars don't belong at my party!"

"Maybe a good shower will wash that smell away."

Laughter.

More insults.

Patricia's voice followed.

"Get her out before she ruins the pictures."

Then Rogelio.

"Check her bag. People like her always steal."

The recording continued.

Every cruel word.

Every mocking laugh.

Every threat toward Mateo.

No editing.

No manipulation.

Just the truth.

When the audio ended, even the birds seemed silent.

Several guests slowly lowered their phones.

Others quietly slipped them into their pockets.

Nobody wanted to be associated with what they had just heard.

Daniela forced another smile.

"So?"

She folded her arms.

"It was rude."

"I admit that."

"But recording private conversations without permission?"

She pointed at Elena.

"That's illegal."

Before Elena could answer, one of the business executives who had arrived with Santiago stepped forward.

Ricardo Velasco.

Chief Legal Counsel for Salgado International.

"It's perfectly legal."

Daniela frowned.

"What?"

"The event is being held on private property owned by Mrs. Elena Salgado."

He looked around the garden.

"Every guest accepted video and audio recording as part of the event's security policy when entering through the front gate."

Several guests suddenly remembered signing a digital agreement at check-in.

Daniela had never bothered reading it.

Now her face began to lose color.

Santiago looked at her quietly.

"There was something else."

Daniela swallowed.

"What?"

"My mother didn't come here because she was bored."

Elena nodded.

"That's true."

She took one slow step toward Daniela.

"I came because I wanted to know whether you loved my son..."

"...or his future."

Daniela laughed nervously.

"That's ridiculous."

"Is it?"

Elena opened another folder from her handbag.

Not papers ruined by water.

Everything had been sealed inside waterproof sleeves.

She handed the folder to Santiago.

"What is this?"

"Our investigation."

Daniela's heartbeat exploded inside her chest.

Investigation?

Impossible.

She had covered everything.

Hadn't she?

Santiago slowly opened the folder.

The first page contained photographs.

Daniela meeting secretly with a lawyer.

Daniela entering a bank with an unknown man.

Daniela leaving a luxury hotel through the back entrance at three o'clock in the morning.

"What is this?" she shouted.

"You're spying on me!"

"No."

Elena's voice remained calm.

"I was protecting my son."

Santiago continued turning pages.

Each one made his expression darker.

Wire transfers.

Property records.

Shell corporations.

Life insurance applications.

Phone records.

Everything connected to Daniela.

Then one document stopped him.

His hands began shaking.

"Mom..."

His voice barely came out.

"What is this?"

Elena looked at him with sadness.

"It's the reason I came today."

Santiago slowly read the first line aloud.

"Confidential Financial Projection Following the Death of Santiago Salgado."

His entire body froze.

Daniela's eyes widened.

"No..."

She whispered.

"No..."

She lunged toward the folder.

"Give me that!"

Before she could reach it, two security officers stepped between them.

Not Daniela's security.

Elena's.

The original security team had quietly returned to the estate fifteen minutes earlier under Elena's direct orders.

Every exit was now covered.

Nobody noticed.

Until it was too late.

Guests looked at one another in growing panic.

Death?

Financial projections?

Why would a bride possess documents calculating the fortune she'd inherit if her fiancé died?

Daniela tried to laugh.

"Someone forged those papers!"

"Did they?"

Elena nodded toward the final page.

"Turn it over, Santiago."

He did.

Attached to the back was a printed email.

The sender's name made his blood run cold.

Victor Álvarez.

Daniela's ex-fiancé.

Officially...

Dead.

Killed eight months earlier in what police had ruled a tragic boating accident.

But the email had been sent...

Three weeks ago.

Santiago stared at the date.

Then at Daniela.

Then back at the email.

His lips slowly parted.

"...Victor is alive?"

Daniela's face went completely white.

She hadn't expected that document.

She hadn't even known it existed.

Elena looked directly into her eyes.

"The wedding was never your final goal."

She paused.

"My son's funeral was."

At that exact moment...

The mansion's front gates swung open.

Three black SUVs rolled slowly into the driveway.

Their flashing blue and red lights illuminated the stunned faces of every guest.

Leading them...

Was the head of the Financial Crimes Division.

And beside him walked a man everyone believed had died months ago.

Victor Álvarez.

Very much alive.

The moment Daniela saw him step out of the SUV...

She whispered two words that no microphone was supposed to capture.

May you like

"You betrayed me."

The officers heard every syllable.
