CHAPTER 3 — The "Dead" Man Walked Into the Wedding… Then the Bride Tried to Run

The moment Victor Álvarez stepped out of the black SUV, every conversation died.

Several guests instinctively took a step backward.

Others stared at him as if they had seen a ghost.

Because according to every newspaper in Mexico eight months earlier...

Victor Álvarez had drowned after his luxury speedboat exploded on a lake outside Valle de Bravo.

His body had supposedly never been recovered.

His funeral had been attended by more than three hundred people.

Daniela herself had cried over his empty coffin.

Now...

He was walking calmly toward the wedding wearing a navy-blue suit.

Alive.

Healthy.

And flanked by federal investigators.

Daniela's face turned ghostly white.

Her knees almost gave out.

"No..."

She whispered.

"This isn't possible..."

Victor stopped less than ten feet away from her.

His expression was cold.

There wasn't a trace of affection left in his eyes.

"I was wondering how long it would take before we met again."

Daniela instinctively backed away.

"I don't know you."

Victor smiled bitterly.

"Interesting."

"You seemed to know me very well when you convinced me to change my life insurance beneficiary."

A wave of shocked murmurs swept across the guests.

Life insurance?

Daniela looked around desperately.

"He's lying!"

"No," Victor replied.

"I've spent the last eight months gathering proof that you tried to kill me."

Santiago stood frozen.

He looked from Victor...

...to Daniela...

...then to his mother.

His entire future was collapsing in front of him.

Elena gently touched his arm.

"I'm sorry."

"I wanted to be wrong."

"So did I," Santiago whispered.

The lead investigator stepped forward and displayed his badge.

"My name is Commander Andrés Ibarra."

"We're executing multiple arrest warrants connected to financial fraud, identity theft, attempted murder, and criminal conspiracy."

The garden erupted.

Some guests immediately rushed toward the exits.

Others began livestreaming the unbelievable scene.

One influencer whispered into her phone,

"This isn't a wedding anymore..."

"It's the biggest scandal of the year."

Daniela suddenly grabbed Santiago's hand.

"Please!"

"You have to believe me!"

"They're setting me up!"

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

"I love you!"

Santiago slowly removed her hand from his.

"When my mother was lying on the ground..."

"You laughed."

"When that waiter showed her kindness..."

"You threatened to destroy his career."

"When everyone humiliated her..."

"You enjoyed every second."

He looked into her eyes.

"I've never seen the real you before today."

"But now I can't unsee it."

Daniela's voice cracked.

"Santiago..."

"The wedding is over."

The words landed like thunder.

Patricia Robles immediately rushed toward Elena.

"This can still be fixed."

Elena raised an eyebrow.

"Can it?"

"We'll apologize publicly."

"We'll donate money."

"We'll do interviews."

"We'll explain everything."

Elena smiled sadly.

"You still don't understand."

"This stopped being about an apology the moment your daughter started planning my son's death."

Patricia froze.

"No..."

She turned toward Daniela.

"Tell me she's lying."

Daniela looked away.

That silence was louder than any confession.

Commander Ibarra nodded toward Victor.

"It's time."

Victor took a deep breath.

"I met Daniela two years ago."

"I thought I'd found the woman I wanted to spend my life with."

The guests listened without moving.

"Six months after we got engaged..."

"...she convinced me to purchase a fifty-million-peso life insurance policy."

Several people exchanged nervous glances.

"She said it would protect our future."

"I believed her."

Victor laughed bitterly.

"The accident happened during a weekend trip."

"My boat exploded."

"Everyone assumed I died."

"But I survived."

Gasps echoed across the garden.

"What saved me..."

"...was the mechanic Daniela bribed to sabotage my boat."

The guests stared in disbelief.

"He changed his mind."

"He secretly warned me an hour before the trip."

"So instead of boarding my own yacht..."

"...I hired someone who looked like me to leave the marina wearing my jacket."

"The explosion happened exactly as planned."

"The investigators believed I was dead."

"But I wasn't."

Daniela screamed.

"He's insane!"

"He's making this up!"

Commander Ibarra calmly opened a thick evidence folder.

"The mechanic has already confessed."

"So has the man who received payment for installing the explosive device."

"The bank transfers came from shell companies linked directly to the Robles family."

Patricia's legs buckled.

She collapsed into a nearby chair.

Rogelio turned pale.

"This..."

"...this wasn't supposed to happen."

Commander Ibarra looked directly at him.

"No."

"It wasn't."

Elena quietly observed every reaction.

She had spent nearly seven months piecing together this puzzle.

At first...

She thought Daniela was simply a gold digger.

Then she noticed something strange.

Every wealthy man Daniela dated experienced mysterious "accidents."

One drowned.

One fell from a horse.

One suffered a brake failure.

One disappeared after transferring ownership of several properties.

None of the cases had enough evidence for prosecution.

Individually...

They looked like terrible luck.

Together...

They formed a pattern.

And Santiago had become the next target.

Commander Ibarra handed Santiago another folder.

"This belongs to you."

Inside were printed text messages recovered from encrypted cloud backups.

Daniela's private conversations.

One message froze his blood.

Unknown Number:
"When do we move?"

Daniela:
"After the honeymoon."

"The mountain road has poor cellphone reception."

"No witnesses."

Another message followed.

"His mother is suspicious."

"We'll deal with her later."

Santiago stopped reading.

His hands were trembling uncontrollably.

He looked at Daniela with tears in his eyes.

"You planned..."

"...to kill my mother too?"

Daniela opened her mouth.

No words came out.

Without warning...

She ran.

Her high heels flew off as she sprinted across the lawn toward the rear gardens.

"Stop her!"

Commander Ibarra shouted.

Two officers chased after her.

Daniela reached the stone wall surrounding the estate.

She climbed desperately, tearing her wedding dress on the iron fence.

For one brief moment...

It looked like she might escape.

Then a black German Shepherd leaped from behind a hedge.

The police dog barked once.

Daniela lost her balance.

She fell backward into the rose bushes with a scream.

Seconds later...

The officers surrounded her.

Cold steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists.

The guests watched in stunned silence as the woman who had expected to become the future Mrs. Salgado...

Was escorted across the same red carpet prepared for her wedding ceremony.

This time...

Not toward the altar.

Toward a police vehicle.

But just as Commander Ibarra began reading Daniela her rights...

A young forensic officer came running from one of the SUVs.

"Commander!"

"You need to see this."

"What happened?"

"We searched Daniela's bridal suite."

"And?"

The officer swallowed hard.

"We found another passport..."

"...another identity..."

"...and photographs proving Daniela Robles doesn't actually exist."

Silence swallowed the garden.

Even Daniela slowly lifted her head.

For the first time that day...

Real fear appeared in her eyes.

Because the identity everyone knew...

The bride...

The fiancée...

The socialite...

Had been nothing more than a carefully constructed lie.

May you like

And somewhere...

The real Daniela Robles might have disappeared years ago.
