CHAPTER 5 — "Emily Is Alive." The Bride's Final Secret Exposed a Billion-Dollar Criminal Empire

Daniela's lips had barely formed the name before she realized what she had done.

"Emily..."

The garden became deathly silent.

Special Agent Rebecca Collins stared at her without blinking.

Slowly, she closed the classified folder.

"You just made the biggest mistake of your life."

Daniela immediately shook her head.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"You just said the name of a child whose identity has been classified for twenty-two years."

Rebecca took one step closer.

"Only four people were supposed to know that name."

"The missing agent..."

"My former supervisor..."

"Myself..."

"And the person who kidnapped her."

Daniela's face lost every trace of color.

Commander Andrés Ibarra quietly ordered the remaining guests away from the center of the garden.

"This wedding is now an active federal crime scene."

Police officers sealed every entrance.

Crime-scene photographers began documenting everything.

The mariachi band packed their instruments without saying a word.

The wedding cake—five tiers of white sugar roses—stood untouched beneath the canopy.

Just an hour earlier it had symbolized a celebration.

Now it looked like evidence.

Santiago remained frozen.

Everything he believed about the woman he loved had collapsed in less than two hours.

He looked at Elena.

"You knew she was dangerous."

"I suspected it," Elena answered honestly.

"But I never imagined it went this far."

Santiago lowered his head.

"I almost brought her into our family."

Elena gently placed a hand on his shoulder.

"No."

"You almost became her next victim."

Rebecca signaled to one of the FBI analysts.

"Bring me the encrypted drive."

A silver evidence case was placed on a nearby table.

Inside was a solid-state drive recovered from Daniela's bridal suite.

The analyst connected it to a secure forensic laptop.

At first...

Nothing happened.

Then the screen filled with folders.

Hundreds of them.

Property deeds.

Offshore bank accounts.

Forged passports.

Encrypted ledgers.

Photographs of luxury homes around the world.

One folder was labeled:

PROJECT LEGACY

Rebecca's expression hardened.

"I've been chasing this name for nine years."

Commander Ibarra frowned.

"What is Project Legacy?"

Rebecca answered quietly.

"It's not a gang."

"It's not a cartel."

"It's a business."

"A business built on dead millionaires."

The guests listened in stunned silence.

Rebecca projected several documents onto a large LED screen that had been prepared for the wedding slideshow.

Ironically...

The same screen that was supposed to display romantic childhood photos now displayed evidence of murder.

Each file followed the same pattern.

Step One:

Target an elderly billionaire or wealthy heir.

Step Two:

Create a romantic relationship.

Step Three:

Encourage changes to wills, insurance policies, or trust agreements.

Step Four:

Stage an accident.

Step Five:

Disappear under a new identity.

More than thirty names appeared.

Different countries.

Different languages.

Different identities.

The estimated value of stolen assets exceeded...

1.8 billion dollars.

Gasps echoed across the garden.

Even seasoned investigators looked stunned.

Victor Álvarez stared at the screen.

"My God..."

"I was just another number."

Rebecca nodded.

"Victim number twenty-eight."

Victor slowly closed his eyes.

"If my mechanic hadn't warned me..."

"I'd already be dead."

Meanwhile...

Daniela remained silent.

Her lawyer, who had arrived only minutes earlier, leaned toward her.

"Don't say another word."

She nodded.

For the first time that day...

She actually listened.

Then another discovery changed everything.

One of the forensic analysts suddenly called out.

"Agent Collins!"

"You need to see this."

Rebecca walked over.

"What is it?"

"We found a hidden partition inside the drive."

He entered another password recovered from Daniela's phone.

A single video file appeared.

Its title contained only one date.

March 17.

Rebecca clicked PLAY.

The image was shaky.

Someone had secretly recorded a meeting inside a private office.

Three people sat around a polished oak table.

Daniela.

An elderly lawyer.

And...

A man wearing sunglasses whose face remained partially hidden.

His voice, however, was unmistakable.

Elena's eyes widened.

"I know that voice."

Santiago looked at her.

"Who is it?"

Elena whispered,

"...Eduardo Varela."

The garden erupted.

Eduardo Varela.

One of Mexico's most respected financial advisers.

He had managed billion-dollar family trusts for decades.

He regularly appeared on television discussing ethics and corporate responsibility.

He was also...

The man who had personally overseen the Salgado family trust for nearly fifteen years.

Santiago's blood ran cold.

"No..."

Rebecca paused the video.

"You know him?"

Elena nodded slowly.

"He had access to every detail of my family's finances."

Every inheritance.

Every investment.

Every insurance policy.

Everything.

Rebecca looked back at the frozen image.

"Then your family wasn't chosen randomly."

The video continued.

Eduardo calmly slid several folders across the table.

One contained Santiago's photograph.

Another contained Elena's.

The third...

Contained architectural plans of the Salgado estate.

Then his voice became perfectly clear.

"After the wedding..."

"...we wait six months."

"No one questions accidents during a honeymoon."

Daniela smiled.

"And his mother?"

Eduardo answered without emotion.

"Old people die every day."

A horrified silence swept through the garden.

Santiago felt his knees weaken.

The man he had trusted since childhood...

The man who had attended every birthday...

Every graduation...

Every family Christmas...

Had calmly discussed murdering his family.

Commander Ibarra immediately grabbed his phone.

"I want every airport notified."

"Find Eduardo Varela."

A voice answered almost instantly.

"Commander..."

"Too late."

"What do you mean?"

"His private jet departed twenty-three minutes ago."

"Destination unknown."

Rebecca's jaw tightened.

"He knew this wedding was compromised."

"He ran."

Elena wasn't surprised.

She looked toward the horizon beyond the mansion.

"No."

"He didn't run."

Everyone looked at her.

"He moved to the next phase."

Rebecca frowned.

"What next phase?"

Elena slowly reached into her handbag one final time.

She removed a folded document she had kept hidden from everyone.

"I received this anonymously three days ago."

She handed it to Rebecca.

Across the top were six terrifying words.

AFTER THE WEDDING, ELIMINATE EVERY WITNESS.

Rebecca unfolded the remaining pages.

There were photographs.

Names.

Addresses.

A kill list.

At the top...

Santiago Salgado.

Second...

Elena Salgado.

Third...

Victor Álvarez.

Fourth...

Special Agent Rebecca Collins.

The entire garden froze.

This had never been just a wedding scam.

It was an execution plan.

And somewhere above Mexico...

Eduardo Varela was flying toward someone powerful enough to erase every trace of the organization.

Then Elena noticed something no one else had seen.

Far beyond the estate...

On a hill overlooking the mansion...

The reflection of sunlight flashed briefly off a rifle scope.

Someone was already watching them.

May you like

Someone who hadn't come to attend the wedding...

But to make sure no one left it alive.
