CHAPTER 1 — THE BULL REMEMBERED

The rodeo exploded with noise long before the first rider entered the arena.

Dust rolled across the ground beneath the blazing afternoon sun. Country music thundered through giant speakers while thousands of spectators packed the metal bleachers, stomping their boots until the entire stadium vibrated. Vendors shouted. Children laughed. Cowboys adjusted their hats behind the gates.

Everyone had come for one reason.

Ranger.

The legendary black bull.

Nearly two thousand pounds of muscle, scarred hide, and raw fury.

No rider had lasted eight seconds on his back in almost four years.

Some said Ranger wasn't just dangerous.

They said he remembered.

Every man who had ever tried to break him walked away injured...

...if they walked away at all.

The announcer's voice echoed across the arena.

"Ladies and gentlemen... are you ready for the most feared bull in America?"

The crowd erupted.

Steel gates rattled.

Then everything changed.

A tiny body suddenly tumbled over the safety railing.

An eight-year-old boy hit the dirt inside the arena with a sickening thud.

Gasps swept through the stadium.

Women screamed.

Parents covered their children's eyes.

Cowboys sprinted toward the gate.

But it was already too late.

Ranger had seen him.

The massive bull slowly turned.

Dark eyes locked onto the small figure lying in the dust.

His nostrils flared.

Hot breath burst into the air.

One hoof scraped violently across the ground.

Dust exploded like smoke.

"GET THAT BOY OUT OF THERE!"

The announcer's voice cracked with panic.

No one could reach him in time.

The child slowly pushed himself onto shaking knees.

His clothes were old.

His boots were worn through.

His face was streaked with dirt and tears.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out something faded.

An old red bandana.

Its edges were torn.

One corner carried stitched initials...

J.H.

He raised it with trembling hands.

"My daddy said..."

His voice almost disappeared beneath the silence.

"...you would remember this."

The arena became unnaturally quiet.

Ranger froze.

The bull stared only at the bandana.

Not the boy.

Not the people.

Only the cloth.

Then...

the impossible happened.

Instead of charging...

Ranger walked forward.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Every heavy step echoed across the dirt.

People begged the child to run.

He didn't move.

Tears streamed down his cheeks.

"If you remember him..."

Ranger suddenly exploded into a full charge.

The crowd screamed.

Dust filled the arena.

Several people fainted.

The boy stood frozen.

At the very last second...

Ranger stopped.

Only inches away.

The giant bull lowered his enormous head...

and gently pressed it against the child's chest.

The little boy wrapped both arms around Ranger's neck and cried like he'd been holding those tears for years.

Across the arena...

an elderly ranch hand dropped the rope he was holding.

His face drained completely of color.

He recognized the initials.

Before anyone could understand why...

the boy lifted his head and shouted across the silent arena.

"You lied to my daddy before he died!"

Every head turned toward the old ranch hand.

His lips trembled.

May you like

Because he knew...

the boy had just opened a secret buried for ten years.
