Chapter 2 - THE COLLATERAL DAMAGEThe cathedral erupted into absolute pandemonium.

High-society matrons shrieked, clutching their expensive pearl necklaces as if the scandal itself might stain them. City politicians, tech executives, and high-profile investors who had vied for seats at the front of the ceremony began whispering furiously, pulling out their phones to check stock prices and emergency PR channels. The Sterling family wedding was supposed to be the social event of the decade; instead, it was turning into the most catastrophic public execution in corporate history.
"Security!" Arthur Sterling’s voice boomed through the PA system, instantly cutting through the rising tide of panic. "Lock the doors. Nobody leaves this building until I say so. Media vans are already gathering outside, and I want every single exit secured so my guests don't have to step through a pack of jackals."
Four towering security guards moved with military precision, sliding heavy iron bolts across the grand oak doors. The metallic clangs sounded like prison cells snapping shut.
Julian fell to his knees. The glossy facade of the charismatic tech wunderkind had completely vanished, leaving behind a pathetic, sweating man in a bespoke tuxedo. He crawled forward, grabbing the heavy hem of Elena’s wedding dress.
"Elena, please!" he sobbed, his voice cracking into an ugly, desperate whine. "Don't listen to them! I love you! Everything I built, every company I founded, every dollar... I did it for us! For our future!"
Elena looked down at him. The man she had adored for two years, the man she had envisioned waking up next to for the rest of her life, looked less like a human being and more like a cockroach scuttling across the floorboards.
Slowly, deliberately, Elena lifted her right foot and pressed her stiletto heel down firmly onto the back of Julian’s hand, right where it clutched her dress.
Julian let out a sharp, choked cry of pain, releasing his grip instantly.
"Don't touch the silk, Julian," Elena said, her voice completely devoid of emotion, cold as deep-space vacuum. "You couldn't afford a single thread of it even before today. And as for your empire? My father financed ninety percent of it through shell companies and venture funds under the Sterling holding group. Do you know what happens to a startup when its primary investor pulls out of a fraudulent contract?"
Julian’s breath hitched. He stared up at her in horror. "You... you wouldn't."
"Watch me," Elena whispered. She turned her back on him completely, walking over to where Maya stood still holding her phone.
The crowd watched in stunned silence as the billionaire bride—still wearing a half-million-dollar gown—stopped just inches away from the quiet, unassuming marketing assistant. For a moment, nobody knew what Elena was going to do. Some expected her to lash out in anger at the woman who had ruined her big day; others expected her to break down in tears.
Instead, Elena reached out and gently placed her manicured hand over Maya’s trembling fingers, helping her steady the phone.
"Is the marriage certificate authentic?" Elena asked softly, her eyes searching Maya’s face.
Maya swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "Every word. Every stamp. We eloped right after college graduation. He promised we’d hold a real public ceremony once he made his first million. But the moment the money started rolling in... he rented a bachelor pad in the city, blocked my number on his personal line, and pretended I didn't exist."
Elena’s lips curved into a chilling, humorless smile. She turned back toward the center of the cathedral, raising her voice so everyone in the room could hear.
"Father," she called out.
"Yes, my darling?" Arthur replied instantly, stepping forward like a general addressing his second-in-command.
"Cancel all pending wire transfers to Vance Technologies. Initiate an immediate forensic audit of every subsidiary he registered under our corporate umbrella over the last thirty-six months." Elena’s eyes flashed with venomous brilliance. "And call our legal team. Tell them to draft a total asset seizure and fraud injunction. I want him bankrupt, blacklisted, and standing trial for corporate perjury before the stock market opens tomorrow morning."
"Consider it done," Arthur said, a predatory grin spreading across his face. He pulled out his private satellite phone, already dialing his chief corporate counsel.
Julian let out a blood-curdling scream, collapsing entirely onto the cold marble floor, beating his fists against the stone in helpless agony. His multi-million-dollar tech empire, his social standing, his freedom, and his luxurious lifestyle were evaporating into thin air before his very eyes.
But the nightmare wasn't over yet.
Maya looked down at Julian, her expression shifting from heartbreak to a cold, calculated determination. She swiped twice on her phone, bringing up a second, even more damning file.
"Oh, Julian," Maya murmured, stepping closer to his crumpled form and leaning down so only he could hear her whisper—though the dead silence of the cathedral carried every single syllable to the front rows. "You didn't just commit bigamy and financial fraud. You forgot that I was the one who managed your corporate compliance files."

She held up the phone screen, displaying a scanned document containing a list of offshore bank accounts and hidden corporate tax evasion schemes bearing Julian's electronic signature.
"And federal tax evasion carries a mandatory prison sentence."
