Chapter 2 - THE WATERPROOF EVIDENCE

"Guards! Security!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice losing all its polished, debutante composure. She pointed a trembling, diamond-ringed finger directly at me. "Get this filthy impostor off our property! Throw her out on the highway!"

Not a single security guard moved.

The two burly men in black suits stationed by the wrought-iron gates didn't even flinch. They knew who paid their quarterly retainers, and it certainly wasn't the Vance family. They had watched the entire spectacle unfold on the perimeter security monitors, and they looked at Vanessa now the way executioners look at a condemned prisoner.

"You don't touch her," Ethan commanded, stepping defensively in front of me as I finally rose to my feet, brushing the damp gravel from my knees.

Richard Vance pushed his way through the stunned crowd of elites, his face slick with nervous sweat. He forced an awkward, oily laugh, trying desperately to salvage a situation that had already careened off a cliff.

"Now, now, let’s all calm down," Richard stammered, holding his hands up placatingly. "It’s a misunderstanding! A harmless prank! Kids will be kids, right? The stress of a wedding makes everyone a little high-strung. Margaret, my dear—if I had known it was you..." He peered closely at me, trying to spot any remnant of the billionaire matriarch beneath the deliberately disheveled appearance. "You look... phenomenal for a surprise visit! A bit unconventional, but—"

"Shut up, Richard," I said quietly.

My voice wasn't loud, but it carried the absolute weight of a woman who controlled half the commercial real estate on the Eastern Seaboard. Richard snapped his mouth shut, blinking as if he’d been slapped.

I reached down, unzipped the water-resistant pocket of the canvas shopping bag, and pulled out the sleek, military-grade recording device. I tossed it casually onto the glass-topped cocktail table in front of the horrified guests. The red recording light was still blinking.

"Did everyone enjoy the show?" I asked, looking slowly around the circle of wealthy faces. Several prominent CEOs who had been laughing the hardest suddenly found the pattern of the patio stone fascinating. "Did my clothes offend your delicate sensibilities, Senator Hayes? Or was it my lack of a designer handbag that really ruined your evening?"

Senator Hayes swallowed hard, pulling at his silk tie. "Mrs. Carter... I assure you, I didn't realize—"

"You didn't care to realize," I interrupted smoothly. "There is a distinct difference between ignorance and cruelty. And tonight, this entire courtyard chose cruelty."

Vanessa rushed forward, her eyes wild with panic and desperate fury. "You planned this! You wore those rags on purpose to humiliate me! What kind of sick, manipulative monster sneaks into her own son’s engagement party dressed like a homeless person just to trap people?!"

"The kind of monster," Arthur Pendelton interjected, holding up his tablet so the screen faced the entire crowd, "who owns eighty percent of the equity in Vance Industries. Miss Vance, your father’s company has been operating on a razor-thin cash-flow margin for the past six months. Without the Carter Group’s liquidity injection—which, I might add, requires a notarized signature from Mrs. Carter herself—Vance Industries files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy by Friday morning."

A collective gasp sucked the air right out of the courtyard.

"Bankruptcy?" Richard clutched his chest, stumbling backward into the arms of a terrified hedge-fund manager. "That’s impossible! We have government defense contracts! We have assets!"

"You had assets," Arthur corrected coldly. "As of ten minutes ago, Mrs. Carter instructed our legal department to execute the default clauses on your primary commercial debt. Your factories are being repossessed as we speak. By sunrise, your family won't just be broke—you’ll be facing federal audit for asset misappropriation."

Vanessa froze. Her manicured hands flew to her mouth. The sheer magnitude of what she had done—the multi-million-dollar empire she had inherited, the lifestyle she took for granted, the husband she had just publicly humiliated—began to collapse around her in real time.

"No," Vanessa whispered, shaking her head frantically. "No, no, no... Ethan! Tell her no! We’re getting married! We love each other! Tell your mother she can’t do this to my family!"

May you like

Ethan turned slowly to look at her. The love in his eyes was gone, replaced by a cold, chilling emptiness.

"I didn't know you were a sadist, Vanessa," Ethan said softly. "And more importantly... I didn't know you were stupid enough to bite the hand that feeds your entire bloodline."
