Chapter 2 - The Tables Turn

"Mother," Alistair repeated, his voice echoing in the absolute tomb of silence that had enveloped the ballroom. "Who gave permission for this trash to enter my home?"

Victoria’s face drained of every drop of color, leaving her looking like a freshly exhumed corpse. Her knees, usually steady in designer heels, began to wobble.

"A-Alistair... I... I didn't know," Victoria stammered, her voice cracking into a pathetic squeak. She raised a trembling hand toward Martha. "She... she was just standing there with that old stick, and—"

"And you snatched it," Alistair finished for her, stepping forward. With every step he took, Victoria instinctively backed away until her spine hit the marble pillar. "You humiliated the woman who raised me. The woman who built the foundation of everything I own while your father was still begging my family for loans."

The elite crowd watched in petrified awe. No one dared to breathe. To interfere with Alistair Sterling's wrath was financial and social suicide.

Victoria tried to salvage her rapidly collapsing reality, flashing a desperate, pleading smile. "Come on, Alistair... it was just a joke! A misunderstanding! We go back years, our families—"

"Our families ceased having any association the moment your father tried to embezzle from my logistics firm five years ago," Alistair interrupted coldly, pulling a sleek gold-plated smartphone from his jacket pocket. "And as for you, Victoria... you’ve been living on borrowed time, and borrowed money."

Victoria’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "What... what do you mean?"

Alistair didn't answer her directly. Instead, he turned his attention to Maya, who was standing quietly a few feet away, still holding Martha’s cane. Alistair’s expression softened instantly, transforming from a ruthless predator into a man of profound respect.

"Maya," Alistair said, his voice carrying clearly across the room.

Maya flinched, bracing herself again. "Yes, Mr. Sterling? I... I know I'm fired. I shouldn't have shoved her, but—"

"Fired?" Alistair raised an eyebrow, a faint, appreciative smirk touching the corner of his lips. "You protected my mother from a deranged harpy. If anything, your reflexes saved this estate from a lawsuit. From this moment forward, you are no longer a junior maid."

Maya blinked, completely bewildered. "I... I'm not?"

"No," Alistair declared, turning back to face the horrified audience of socialites. "Effective immediately, Maya is promoted to Chief Director of Estate Operations, with a hundred-fold salary increase and full equity partnership in Sterling Holdings' philanthropic division."

Gasps echoed through the room. Maya’s hands flew to her mouth, tears of absolute disbelief welling in her eyes.

"As for Victoria Vance," Alistair continued, his voice hardening back into pure steel as he raised his phone. "Let’s see how much arrogance remains when you have absolutely nothing left."

With a single tap on his screen, Alistair pressed broadcast.

Suddenly, the massive state-of-the-art projection screens lining the ballroom wall flickered to life. Instead of charity auction slides, they displayed live financial data, court injunctions, and internal bank audits bearing the Vance Corporation logo.

Victoria screamed.
