Chapter 7 - THE BREAKFAST AMBUSH

The executive dining room on the forty-fourth floor of Sterling Tower was bathed in the golden light of early morning. Arthur Sterling sat at the center of the walnut table, casually sipping an espresso while reviewing the financial summaries for the upcoming quarterly report. He looked immaculate in a bespoke charcoal suit, his silver-streaked hair giving him an air of dignified authority.
When the double doors opened and I walked in, followed closely by Charles and two federal marshals in plain clothes, Arthur didn't even flinch. He merely lowered his coffee cup with a smooth, practiced motion.
“Evelyn,” Arthur said, offering a warm, condescending smile. “I heard you were back in the building. Quite a dramatic entrance at the gala on Saturday night. I trust you're feeling better? The board was deeply concerned about your health relapse.”
I walked straight to the head of the table, pulling out my chair without sitting down. Maya stood by the doorway, her arms crossed, watching her cousin with sharp, unblinking eyes.
“My health is remarkably resilient, Arthur,” I said, resting my hands on the polished wood. “Especially now that I’ve stopped drinking the tea your business partners provided.”
Arthur’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered, feigning polite confusion. “I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about, cousin. If you're referring to Adrian’s foolish actions, the ethics committee was the first to recommend his suspension.”
“The ethics committee,” Charles interjected, tossing the black leather notebook onto the table right in front of Arthur’s coffee cup, “which conveniently overlooked forty-five million dollars in missing funds, falsified medical records, and the systematic suppression of regulatory audits.”
Arthur looked down at the notebook. The gold-embossed initials A.S. seemed to burn against the dark leather. For the first time, his polished facade cracked. Sweat beaded along his hairline.
“This is an unauthorized search,” Arthur said, his voice rising in panic as he pushed the book away. “You have no right—”
“I own seventy-two percent of the voting shares and the entirety of the holding estate, Arthur,” I interrupted, leaning forward so he had no choice but to meet my eyes. “Which means I have every right to search every square inch of property bearing the Sterling name. Including your private office down the hall.”
Before Arthur could stand, the federal marshals stepped forward, placing heavy hands on his shoulders and pressing him back into his leather chair.
“Arthur Sterling, you are being detained for questioning regarding corporate conspiracy, bribery, and obstruction of justice,” the lead agent announced, snapping a pair of steel cuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.
Arthur glared up at me, his mask of corporate civility completely shredded, revealing the desperate, snarling coward underneath.
“You think you’ve won, Evelyn?” he spat as the marshals hauled him to his feet. “You think running a company is about sentimentality and family bloodlines? Sterling Global is a shark tank! Without Adrian and without me, the board will tear you apart within six months!”
May you like
“Let them try,” I said coldly. “I built this tank.”
As the doors closed behind Arthur, the silence in the executive dining room felt heavy, cleansing, and absolute.
