Chapter 2 - The Trap on the Tarmac

Gate 17 was a ghost town by the time Ryker and his security detail arrived. The regular passengers had been cleared out by airport security, and the gate agent—a young woman sweating through her uniform collar—was frantically typing on her terminal while staring at a red warning light flashing across her monitor.

"Mr. Steel," the agent stammered, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the floor. "The... the plane has stopped its taxi. The pilot is threatening to call the FAA. You can't just halt an international flight—"

"Watch me," Ryker said coldly, sliding a heavy metal badge across the desk—a special federal clearance card bearing the seal of the Department of Defense's highest logistical oversight tier.

The agent glanced at the badge, turned pale as chalk, and swallowed hard. "Boarding bridge... boarding bridge is open."

"Good girl," Ryker muttered.

He didn't let go of Lily's hand. With Owen walking beside him, clutching his teddy bear like a soldier holding a rifle, Ryker strode down the enclosed jet bridge. The metallic echo of their footsteps sounded like the march of a firing squad.

At the end of the bridge, the cabin door of the Boeing 777 was cracked open. A frantic flight attendant peered out, her face flushed with annoyance. "Sir, you cannot—this is a violation of federal protocol—"

Ryker bypassed her with a single shove of his shoulder, stepping into the hushed, luxurious cabin of first class.

The first-class cabin instantly went dead silent. Twenty passengers looked up from their champagne flutes and designer laptops. But at seat 2A, a woman in an expensive beige cashmere coat froze mid-sip of her sparkling water.

Elena Vance.

Her face, caked in high-end cosmetics designed to hide a shallow soul, twisted into a mask of pure terror as she recognized the massive, imposing figure walking down the aisle. Behind him, two small figures emerged into the aisle light.

"Elena," Ryker said, his voice cutting through the cabin like a butcher's knife.

Elena stood up so fast her crystal glass shattered on the carpet, spilling sparkling water across her designer shoes. "Who—who are you? Security! Security! This man is a lunatic! Remove him from the plane immediately!"

"Sit down, Elena," Ryker commanded, stepping directly into her personal space. The sheer physical presence of him forced her back against her leather seat.

"I don't know you!" she shrieked, her voice rising an octave in frantic desperation. "These aren't my kids! They’re... they’re wards of the state! I was taking them to a specialized boarding facility in Switzerland! It’s all legal! I have papers!"

"You have forgery," Ryker corrected smoothly, pulling a folded document from his coat pocket and dropping it onto her tray table. "You also have three million dollars in liquid bearer bonds stolen from Arthur Vance’s medical trust. And, as of thirty seconds ago, you have a federal arrest warrant for child abandonment, grand larceny, and corporate fraud."

Elena’s eyes bulged. She stared at the document—a federal indictment bearing the signature of a federal magistrate judge Ryker had called six minutes ago.

"You can't do this!" Elena cried, her voice cracking as she looked around the cabin for allies, finding only cold, averted stares from wealthy travelers who wanted nothing to do with her drama. "Those brats were ruining my life! Arthur left me nothing! The house is foreclosed! I deserved that money!"

Down in the aisle, Owen looked up at his stepmother. His voice, small and steady, pierced the cabin air like a silver bullet.

"You said we were garbage," Owen said.

Elena flinched as if she had been struck with a cattle prod.

Ryker bent down on one knee, bringing himself eye-level with the twins. He reached out and gently rested his large, warm hand on Owen’s small shoulder.

"Listen to me very carefully, kids," Ryker said, his voice softening, stripping away all the ice and steel until only absolute truth remained. "From this second forward, no one will ever touch you. No one will ever leave you. Because you belong to me now."
