Chapter 6 - The Siege at Dusk

The Montana winter descended with sudden, brutal force. Heavy snow blanketed the pine forests surrounding the Steel Estate, turning the landscape into a silent, white wasteland where only the hum of high-end security generators broke the stillness.

Inside the grand library, a crackling fire roared in a massive stone fireplace. Lily and Owen were seated at a long mahogany table, deeply engrossed in a drawing session. Lily was coloring a picture of a fierce black wolf standing protectively over two small deer, while Owen was busy sketching an elaborate blueprint for a security drone equipped with laser shields.

Ryker sat nearby in a high-backed leather armchair, reading a leather-bound volume of international maritime law, though his attention remained razor-sharp on the perimeter monitors glowing softly on a concealed wall panel.

Marco walked into the room, his boots shedding fresh snow onto the heavy Persian rug. His face was set in hard, tactical lines.

"Boss, our perimeter sensors just picked up three unmarked tactical vehicles entering the private access road five miles out," Marco reported quietly, not wanting to alarm the children. "Thermal imaging shows twelve armed operatives equipped with night-vision gear and suppressed assault rifles. They’re moving fast, professional grade. Mercenaries hired by Sterling."

Ryker didn't look up from his book immediately. He slowly turned a page, his thumb tracing the edge of the heavy paper.

"Twelve men," Ryker murmured. "Julian really thinks he can buy an army to dig out my backyard."

"They're bypassing the primary gate sensors," Marco said, his hand resting near the pistol holster concealed beneath his jacket. "Shall we initiate the automated drone defense grid?"

"No," Ryker said, closing his book with a soft, decisive thud. He stood up, towering over the room. "Let them get past the outer treeline. I want them to realize the scale of their mistake before they take their last breath."

He walked over to the table where the twins were drawing.

Owen looked up, his pale blue eyes wide. "Are bad guys coming?"

Ryker knelt down, offering a reassuring, calm smile that completely erased any trace of fear.

"Just some visitors who forgot to knock, buddy," Ryker said gently. "Marco and I are going to go outside and remind them of our house rules. You two stay right here with Sarah and finish your drawings. When we come back, we’ll make hot chocolate."

"Can I help build the trap next time?" Owen asked seriously.

Ryker chuckled, patting the boy's head. "Deal. Protect your sister."

With a nod to Marco, Ryker turned and walked toward the tactical armory hidden behind the study wall.

Ten minutes later, the silence of the Montana night was shattered by a deafening chorus of electronic pulses and controlled kinetic blasts echoing through the snowy pines.
