Chapter 8 - The Hearth and the Horizon

Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the massive bay windows of the Steel Estate, warming the hardwood floors and sparkling off the fresh snow outside.
In the grand living room, a towering Christmas tree—decorated with handmade paper ornaments, silver stars, and one special toy mechanical robot built by Owen—stood proudly in the corner.
Lily and Owen were sitting on the plush carpet, laughing as they unwrapped a massive set of building blocks delivered by a very bewildered delivery driver who had to navigate three checkpoints just to reach the front door.
Ryker stood in the doorway of the kitchen, holding a mug of black coffee, watching them. The harsh, hard lines of his face had softened over the weeks. The ghost who once owned the shadows of the underworld had discovered something far heavier, far more enduring than power or money.
Marco walked up beside him, holding a fresh legal document stamped with the official seal of the Montana Supreme Court.
"It’s official, Boss," Marco said quietly. "The adoption papers cleared this morning. Arthur and Elena Vance’s parental rights have been permanently terminated, and the court has granted you full, unchallengeable legal custody of Lily and Owen Vance. No appeals left. They are officially Steels."
Ryker looked down at the document, his fingers tracing the embossed seal. A quiet, profound peace settled over him for the first time in his entire life.
Across the room, Owen suddenly looked up from his building blocks. He caught Ryker’s eye, stood up, and trotted across the rug, holding up a small, freshly built wooden airplane.
"Hey, Dad," Owen said, using the word for the very first time, his voice completely steady and filled with absolute trust. "Can we fly this outside today?"
Ryker set his coffee mug down on the console table, knelt down on one knee, and smiled a wide, genuine smile that reached his eyes.

"Only if you teach me how to pilot it," Ryker said, pulling both Owen and Lily into a warm, unbreakable embrace.
Outside, the Montana mountains stood tall and eternal against the winter sky, guarding a fortress where two children who had once been left behind in the cold would never, ever be abandoned again.
