Chapter 1 - The Red Light’s Secret

The click of the EpiPen echoed like a gun discharge in the silent study, but what followed was far more deadly.
Alejandro Moretti’s lungs expanded in a sudden, violent gasp. Air rushed into his body as the epinephrine fought the lethal dose of peanut derivative and cyanide mixed into his vintage Barolo. His grip on my tiny four-year-old wrist was crushing—not out of malice, but from the raw, desperate reflex of a dying predator clawing his way back from the abyss.
"Emma..." a trembling voice gasped from the doorway.
It was my mother, Elena, her apron stained with flour, her face drained of all color as she took in the scene: the shattered crystal glass, the fallen Don of the Moretti Syndicate, and her toddler daughter kneeling in a pool of expensive wine holding an empty auto-injector.
"Step away from the Don!" shouted Guard Marco, drawing his Beretta. His hand was shaking violently. Beside him stood Guard Dominic, the senior head of security, whose eyes were fixed not on Alejandro, but on a leather-bound book on the third shelf of the mahogany bookcase.
Inside that book sat a hidden pinhole camera—a secret surveillance feed linked directly to Alejandro’s private cloud server, accessible only by a biometric scanner on his wristwatch.
"Dominic..." Alejandro rasped, his voice sounding like ground glass. He pushed himself up slowly, his chest heaving, his dark eyes locking onto his chief of security. "Who... poured... the wine?"
Dominic’s jaw clenched. He didn't answer. Instead, his hand slid toward his holstered weapon.
He hadn't expected Alejandro to survive. The poison was meant to kill him in under ninety seconds, mimicking a sudden heart attack or severe allergic reaction. Dominic had personally ensured that Alejandro’s personal medical kit—including his own prescription EpiPens—had been emptied earlier that morning. He had watched Alejandro collapse, waiting for his last breath before calling the underbosses to claim the empire.
He hadn't accounted for a four-year-old girl with a pink rabbit backpack.
"She... she poisoned him!" Dominic suddenly yelled, pointing a finger at my terrified mother. "Elena prepared the evening tray! She put something in the glass!"
"No! I didn't! I only brought the bottle from the cellar!" Elena cried out, throwing her hands up.
"Guards, execute them both!" Dominic ordered, reaching for his gun.
“STAND DOWN!” Alejandro’s voice thundered through the room, authority crashing over the guards like a tidal wave.
Though his body was weak, his aura was terrifying. Alejandro tapped his wristwatch against his phone. The tiny red light on the bookshelf blinked twice, and a high-definition video feed immediately began playing on the massive monitor behind his desk.
The footage was crystal clear: Five minutes ago, Dominic had entered the empty study. He pulled a small glass vial from his inner jacket pocket, poured five dark drops into Alejandro’s glass, and stirred it with a golden letter opener.
The entire room went dead silent.
"You..." Alejandro whispered, his eyes flashing with lethal fury. "Thirty years of loyalty, Dominic. I treated you like a brother."
Realizing he was exposed, Dominic raised his gun toward Alejandro’s head. "You're weak, Alejandro! You let the rival families walk over us! The Moretti empire belongs to someone who isn't afraid to bleed!"
BANG!
A gunshot shattered the room, but it didn't come from Dominic.
Alejandro had pulled a hidden snub-nosed revolver from beneath the desk drawer. The bullet struck Dominic squarely in the shoulder, knocking him back against the wall. Before Marco or any other guard could react, Alejandro stood up, despite his trembling legs, walked over, and kicked Dominic’s gun across the floor.
He looked down at the bleeding traitor, then turned his gaze to me.
I was still sitting on the floor, clutching my empty blue-capped tube.
Alejandro knelt beside me—the terrifying Don humbling himself before a maid’s child. He gently placed his hand on my head.
"You saved my life, little one," he said softly, his voice trembling with an emotion no one in the Syndicate had ever witnessed. "And in doing so, you saved this family."
He looked up at my mother, who was sobbing in relief, and then at Marco.
"Lock Dominic in the basement," Alejandro commanded coldly. "And call my personal physician. Not for me... for the child. She gave me her last medicine. Find every EpiPen in this city and bring them to this house."
He picked me up in his arms, pink backpack and all.

"Starting tonight," Alejandro announced to the entire security detail gathering in the hall, "Elena and her daughter are under my personal protection. Anyone who looks at them the wrong way dies."
Hook: But as Alejandro carried me out of the study, I looked back at the security monitor. The video feed was still playing, but in the reflection of the glass screen, I saw something the Don missed: Marco secretly sending a text message on his phone that read: “Plan A failed. Initiate Plan B.”
