Chapter 8 - The Unexpected Heir

"Mr. Moretti, stop!" I screamed, my small voice piercing through the heavy rain.

Alejandro froze. The barrel of the gun was inches from Leo’s forehead. He turned his head slowly to look down at me. I was soaking wet, holding my pink rabbit backpack tightly against my chest, my big eyes filled with tears.

"Emma..." Alejandro said softly, his voice cracking. "Get back with your mother. This isn't something you should see."

"If you shoot him, you become just like the bad men who tried to hurt us," I sobbed, pulling on his coat. "Mama said... mama said good people don't kill when they don't have to."

The entire tarmac was silent. Fifty armed syndicate soldiers, Don Carmine, and the tactical squads watched in disbelief as a four-year-old child held back the most dangerous Don in North America.

Alejandro stared at me for a long, agonizing moment. The lethal rage in his dark eyes slowly melted away, replaced by profound humility.

He lowered the gun.

He looked down at his brother Leo, who was cowering in the mud, trembling and gasping for air.

"You're not worth her soul, Leo," Alejandro said with disgust. He tossed the gun into the dark water of the puddle. "Guards. Take him. Lock him in the basement cell in New York. He will spend the rest of his life staring at concrete walls."

"Yes, Don Alejandro!" Marco barked, dragging the weeping traitor away in handcuffs.

Don Carmine walked over, his heavy leather boots squelching in the mud. He looked at Alejandro, then knelt down in front of me, his harsh old face softening into a genuine smile.

"So," Don Carmine said in a deep, gravelly voice. "This is the little girl who saved my godson twice and stopped a war tonight."

"My name is Emma," I said quietly, hiding slightly behind Alejandro’s leg.

Don Carmine chuckled, standing back up and looking at Alejandro. "She has more heart and courage than half the bosses sitting on the High Council, Alejandro. What are you going to do now? DeLuca is still hiding in Switzerland."

Alejandro picked me up into his arms, wrapping his dry jacket over me, and looked at my mother, who ran over and hugged us both tightly.

"DeLuca’s empire is already falling," Alejandro said, his eyes glowing with fierce determination. "Without Leo, he has no power here. I will handle DeLuca by sunrise. But my priority... is my family."

THREE YEARS LATERThe bright morning sun shone over the rolling green hills of a grand estate in Tuscany, Italy.

The old burned mansion was a distant memory. In its place stood a majestic villa, surrounded by olive groves, rose gardens, and state-of-the-art security systems that could protect a fortress.

In the courtyard, seven-year-old me was running through the grass, laughing as my new golden retriever puppy chased behind me.

Sitting on the shaded patio was my mother, Elena. She was no longer a maid. She was now the head of the Moretti Charitable Foundation, managing millions of dollars to build hospitals, orphanages, and free medical clinics across Europe—ensuring no family ever lacked lifesaving medicine like EpiPens again.

Alejandro stood beside her, sipping an espresso, looking healthier and stronger than ever.

"Emma!" Alejandro called out with a warm smile. "Come here, little princess."

I ran up the marble steps, dropping my backpack on the table.

Alejandro reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it to reveal a golden emblem featuring a rose wrapped around a dagger—the official seal of the Moretti Syndicate.

"What's this, Papa Alejandro?" I asked. (I had started calling him Papa a year ago).

"Today is your seventh birthday," Alejandro said gently, placing the golden crest on a delicate gold chain around my neck. "And according to the High Council of Europe, today you are officially declared the sole legal heir to the Moretti empire."

Mama smiled, wiping a joyful tear from her eye.

"An heir?" I blinked my big eyes. "But I don't want to be a mafia boss, Papa."

Alejandro laughed, a rich, happy sound that echoed through the sunny courtyard. He pulled me into a warm hug and kissed the top of my head.

"You don't have to be a mafia boss, Emma," Alejandro said softly, looking out over the peaceful Italian valley. "Because of you, we aren't a mafia anymore. You saved my life... and then you saved my soul."
