Chapter 2 - The Golden Cage

Overnight, our lives flipped upside down.

Mama and I were moved from the small, damp basement quarters into the grand east wing of the estate—a suite reserved for high-ranking royalty. Rich velvet curtains, plush carpets, and a bed so big I could jump on it for hours replaced our creaky twin cot.

Yet, despite the luxury, the air inside the Moretti mansion smelled of ozone and dread.

Alejandro had placed the entire compound on lockdown. Heavy iron gates were locked, perimeter turrets were activated, and twenty armed men in black suits guarded our floor around the clock.

My mother was terrified. She sat on the edge of the silk duvet, wringing her hands until her knuckles turned white. "Emma, baby... we shouldn't be here. These are dangerous men. Blood follows them wherever they go."

"Mr. Moretti gave me a toy, Mama," I said, pointing to a massive teddy bear resting in the corner, twice my size.

"He's a Don, Emma. He doesn't give gifts without a cost."

A light knock sounded at the door before Alejandro walked in. He had traded his blood-soaked shirt for a crisp black suit, though his skin was still pale from the poison's lingering effects. Behind him was his head physician, Dr. Vance, carrying a padded medical case.

"How is she?" Alejandro asked, his voice softer than usual.

"Her vitals are stable, Don Alejandro," Dr. Vance replied. "However, given her history of severe anaphylaxis, she requires immediate access to fresh epinephrine at all times. I have placed six new auto-injectors in her room and with her mother."

Alejandro nodded, then turned to Mama. "Elena. Sit."

Mama stood up abruptly, bowing her head. "Mr. Moretti... please, we don't want any trouble. We can pack our things and leave. You don't owe us anything—"

"Leave?" Alejandro cut her off, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Dominic was not working alone. He was funded by the DeLuca crime family—our oldest enemies. The moment they realize a four-year-old girl ruined their assassination plot, you and your daughter become primary targets. Out there, you are dead within an hour. Here, you are safe."

"Safe?" Mama whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks. "In a house full of guns?"

"In a fortress," Alejandro corrected firmly. "I have drafted papers. As of today, you are no longer a maid. You are the manager of this household staff, with a full salary, legal immunity, and private security. And Emma..." He looked at me, a rare, faint smile touching his lips. "...will receive the finest education money can buy. She saved my life. The Moretti family pays its debts tenfold."

He bent down to my eye level and handed me a tiny silver key on a chain.

"What is this, Mr. Moretti?" I asked, dangling the key.

"This opens the heavy wooden door at the end of the secret garden," he said gently. "If anything ever happens in this house—if you hear guns or screaming—you take your mother, run to that door, and use this key. It leads to an underground tunnel out of the estate."

"Why are you giving this to me?"

"Because," Alejandro said, his eyes darkening as he glanced toward the hallway, "I don't trust anyone in this house anymore."

Later that afternoon, while Mama was resting, I slipped out of the room to fetch my stuffed rabbit, which I had left on the lower terrace.

As I tiptoed down the grand marble staircase, I overheard voices coming from the library. The door was cracked open.

"We have a problem, Marco," a harsh, raspy voice hissed from a laptop speaker on the table. It was a video call.

"I know, Boss DeLuca," Marco replied, pacing nervously. "Dominic is in the basement dungeon being tortured by Alejandro's enforcers. It's only a matter of time before he cracks and tells him you paid for the poison."

"Then we strike tonight," the voice from the laptop commanded. "Alejandro is still weak from the toxic compound. Turn off the perimeter security grid at midnight. Kill Alejandro, kill the maid, and bring me the child."

"The child? Why the girl?" Marco asked.

"Because," Boss DeLuca sneered, "I want to break Alejandro’s spirit before he dies. I want him to watch the girl who saved him perish first."

My heart hammered against my ribs. I squeezed my eyes shut, holding my breath, stepping backward—

CRACK.

My foot stepped on a loose wooden floorboard.

Marco turned instantly toward the doorway. "Who's there?!"

Hook: He pulled a silenced pistol from under his jacket and walked slowly toward the door where I was hiding.
