Chapter 6 - Melanie’s Desperate GambleBack in the suburbs, Melanie Vance was watching her carefully constructed life disintegrate in real-time.

With Tucker locked behind federal bars and all joint accounts frozen under federal racketeering warrants, Melanie had no access to the funds needed to sustain her lavish lifestyle, let alone finish her fraudulent beauty salon. The commercial landlord had already padlocked the storefront doors, sticking a massive eviction and lien notice across the glass.
Worse still, her high-end apartment management had served her an eviction notice for three months of back rent.
Panic-stricken and desperate, Melanie decided to take matters into her own hands. She knew where I lived now—not our old marital home, but the secure, high-rise luxury condominium downtown where I had temporarily relocated under federal protective detail.
Late Friday evening, the security concierge desk buzzed my unit.
"Mrs. Vance?" the security guard's voice came through the intercom. "There is a visitor downstairs insisting on seeing you. A Ms. Melanie Vance. She claims it's an urgent family emergency."
I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse living room, looking down at the glittering city skyline below. A cold, sardonic smile touched my lips.
"Let her up, security," I instructed smoothly. "Send her straight to my floor. But notify the lobby marshals to stand by on standby for when she leaves."
"Understood, ma'am."
Ten minutes later, the private elevator chime dinged.
The heavy oak door of my penthouse swung open—or rather, Melanie pounded frantically on it until I unlocked it from the smart-panel.
Melanie barged past me into the foyer without an invitation. Her hair was messy, her designer handbag scuffed, and her designer coat wrinkled. All the arrogant smugness she used to display across our breakfast table had vanished, replaced by desperate, feral panic.
"Emma! Thank God!" Melanie gasped, slamming the door behind her and clutching her chest. "You have to help us! You have to call the federal prosecutor and tell them this is all a misunderstanding!"
I crossed my arms, leaning casually against the doorframe, looking down at her with icy detachment.
"A misunderstanding, Melanie?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm. "Is that what you call forging my identity, setting up offshore money laundering accounts, and trying to extort forty thousand dollars of my inheritance to fund a fraudulent salon?"
"We panicked, okay?!" Melanie shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as she stepped closer to me. "Tucker is your husband! You can't just let him rot in federal prison! And me? I’m innocent! I was just an investor! If you don't drop the charges, I swear to God, Emma, I will make your life a living hell. I’ll tell everyone lies about you, I’ll ruin your reputation—"
"Ruin my reputation?" I laughed softly, a cold, humorless sound that echoed off the marble floors.
I stepped forward, towering over her despite my lack of height, my executive presence radiating absolute authority.
"Melanie, look around you," I whispered, gesturing to the multi-million-dollar penthouse suite overlooking the city. "Your brother is facing twenty-five years behind bars. You are facing federal conspiracy charges, asset forfeiture, and imminent eviction. You have no money, no leverage, and no allies."
Melanie trembled, her lower lip quivering. "Please, Emma... have mercy. We’re family."
"Family?" I echoed, the word tasting like poison. "The last time I checked, family doesn't hold you down while your brother pours boiling liquid in your face. Family doesn't steal your father's legacy to fund criminal enterprises."
I reached out, pressing the call button on my wall-mounted security panel.
"Security, escort Ms. Vance out of the building. And notify the federal marshals waiting in the lobby that she has violated the secondary restraining order regarding intimidation of a key witness."
"No! No, wait, Emma, please—!" Melanie screamed, lunging forward to grab my arm.
Before her fingers could touch my jacket sleeve, two federal marshals stepped out of the private elevator alcove, grabbing her arms firmly and hauling her backward toward the exit.
"Let me go! You bitches! You'll pay for this!" Melanie shrieked as she was dragged down the hallway, her voice fading away into the elevator shaft.

The heavy oak door clicked shut. Silence settled over the penthouse once more.
I walked back to the window, gazing out at the night lights, realizing with absolute clarity that the nightmare was finally over. But the best part? The reckoning was only just beginning.
