Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW IN THE REARVIEW MIRRORChapter 1: The Code in the ConcreteThe black SUV vanished into the chaotic downtown traffic, leaving behind a plume of exhaust and an echoing siren wail inside the private underground garage. Nathaniel’s grip on Malcolm’s collar was so tight his knuckles turned bone-white.

"Where is my grandson?" Nathaniel’s voice was a low, terrifying rumble that forced the surrounding security guards to step back.
Malcolm didn't flinch. Instead, a cold, mocking smile spread across his lips. "You’re looking in the wrong direction, brother. By now, the boy is already past the county line. You can lock every door in Graves Tower, but you can’t lock down a city of ten million people."
I stood frozen near the private elevator, my patched backpack still clutched tightly in my hands. The heavy scent of ozone and burning rubber hung in the air. A brother. I had an older brother named Samuel. For eight years, it had just been Mom and me against the world, surviving on instant noodles, whispered prayers, and second-hand clothes. Now, the universe was cracking wide open, revealing a terrifying labyrinth of hidden history.
"Sir!" The security director rushed over, his tablet flashing with red tracking alerts. "We caught the SUV’s temporary plates on traffic cams. It's heading toward the old industrial shipping yards by the East River. The warehouses down there... they belong to a shell company registered under Graves Energy."
Nathaniel shoved Malcolm hard against the concrete pillar. He turned to his chief of security. "Mobilize every team. Block the perimeter. If that car moves another inch, disable it." He dropped his gaze to me, his expression softening instantly, filled with a raw, protective ache. "Ruby, stay with the director. We are going to find your mother, and we are going to find your brother."

"I want to go with you," I said, my voice shaking. "Mom is at the apartment. The paramedic said she was barely breathing."
"We have a medical chopper on the roof. It will get to her in minutes," Nathaniel promised, his hand resting gently on my shoulder. But as he turned back to face Malcolm, the billionaire's eyes hardened into flint. "As for you, brother... your days of running things from the shadows are over."
