Chapter 5 - The Reunion at St. Jude’sThe sterile, white-walled room of St. Jude’s Private Medical Center smelled faintly of antiseptic and crushed lavender. Heart monitors beeped in a steady, reassuring rhythm—a stark contrast to the ragged, fading gasps my mother had been making just hours earlier.

Mom lay propped up against a stack of feather pillows. Her skin was still pale, but color had returned to her lips.

The door opened softly, and Nathaniel walked in, leading Samuel and me by our hands. Behind us walked a team of doctors, but they stayed in the hallway, leaving us alone in the quiet sanctuary of the room.

Mom stopped breathing for a microsecond as her eyes locked onto Samuel. Tears instantly spilled over her eyelashes, cutting clean tracks down her pale cheeks.

"Samuel..." she choked out, her voice cracking with a decade and a half of unshed grief.

Samuel dropped his small bag on the floor and ran to the bedside, burying his face in his mother's arms. "Mom! They told me... they told me you were dead!"

"I'm so sorry, my sweet boy," Mom sobbed, stroking his dark hair with trembling fingers. "I tried... I tried so hard to keep you both safe."

She looked up, her gaze shifting to me standing awkwardly near the foot of the bed. She extended her weak hand. "Ruby... come here, my little fighter."

I climbed up onto the edge of the mattress, letting her pull me into a tight, desperate embrace. For the first time in my entire life, I didn't feel like a poor girl living above a closed laundromat, terrified of the next eviction notice. I felt safe.

Nathaniel stood quietly by the window, watching us with a quiet, devastating intensity. He cleared his throat softly. "Elena... I am so sorry. For everything."

Mom looked at her father. The walls of bitterness she had built up over twelve years seemed to crumble in the heavy silence of the room. "You didn't know, Dad. I know you didn't know."

"Malcolm is in custody," Nathaniel said, his voice hard as iron. "And the board of trustees has already voted in an emergency session. As of twenty minutes ago, Malcolm Graves has been stripped of all titles, all shares, and all access to Graves Energy. He will spend the rest of his life behind bars."
