Chapter 5 - Ruin, Rags, and the True Debt

The next day, the mansion was a war zone of spite and destruction.
While Mauricio sat on the living room floor, his head in his hands, completely paralyzed by the freezing of his bank accounts and the looming threat of prison, Valeria had gone completely feral.
She took a heavy metal hammer from Mauricio’s toolbox.
Smash!
The beautiful Italian marble tiles in the foyer shattered into jagged white shards.
Rip!
She dragged a knife through the expensive silk drapes she had bragged about to her high-society friends.
"They want the house?" Valeria screamed, her eyes wild, her hair disheveled. "Let them have it! Let’s see how much Arturo likes his mansion when the pipes are flooded and the walls are ruined!"
She ran into the master bathroom, turned on all the faucets, and blocked the drains with thick towels. Water began to pour over the edges of the marble sinks, cascading down the stairs like a waterfall. She took cans of black spray paint and sprayed vulgar words across the pristine white walls of the living room.
Mauricio didn't stop her. He was hollowed out, staring at his phone. He had tried to call his wealthy friends, his business partners, his elite social circle.
Every single one of them had blocked his number.
The news of his treatment of his mother, along with the leaked videos Sofia had gathered, had already spread like wildfire through Querétaro's high society. The local news blogs had picked up the story with sensationalist headlines: “Local Entrepreneur Treats Mother Like Slave in Million-Dollar Mansion!”
His career was over. His social standing was dead.
Suddenly, the sound of splintering wood echoed through the house.
The front door was kicked open.
A squad of police officers, led by a stern police captain, burst into the flooded foyer. Behind them came Arturo, Carmen, and Hector Delgado, accompanied by a professional camera crew.
"Freeze!" the police captain shouted, pointing at Valeria, who was standing on the stairs, a hammer in one hand and a spray paint can in the other. "Drop the weapon! You are under arrest for grand property damage and vandalism!"
Valeria gasped, dropping the hammer. It clattered down the wet marble stairs. "What? No! This is our house! We can do what we want!"
"Not anymore, it isn't," Hector Delgado said, walking into the flooded hallway, completely unfazed by the water ruining his expensive shoes. "The court order took effect yesterday. As of 24 hours ago, this property legally belonged to Arturo Montes. What you have just done is destroy someone else's property. And we have the entire thing recorded."
One of the camera crew members raised his professional lens, capturing Valeria’s smudged makeup and panicked face in high-definition.
"Arturo!" Mauricio begged, crawling through the water on his knees toward his father. "Please, stop this! I’ll pay you back! I’ll do whatever you want!"
Arturo looked down at his son, his face showing nothing but pity.
"You can't pay me back, Mauricio," Arturo said softly. "You don't have a single peso left. The bank has already seized your remaining assets to cover the forged loan. And the damage you and your wife just caused to this house? It will cost at least one million pesos to repair. That debt will follow you for the rest of your lives."
Carmen stepped forward from behind Arturo. She looked at her son. Her eyes were no longer filled with tears of sorrow, but with the quiet dignity of a mother who had finally freed herself.
"I loved you, Mauricio," Carmen said, her voice echoing in the ruined hall. "I would have given my life for you. But you traded your soul for a lifestyle you couldn't afford. May God forgive you, because I cannot."
"Take them away," the police captain ordered.
The officers grabbed Mauricio and Valeria, dragging them through the water and out the front door. Valeria shrieked and cursed, while Mauricio wept silently, his face pressed against the wet, ruined tiles of the floor he had once walked on like a king.
As the police cars drove away, their sirens fading into the distance, Arturo looked around the ruined mansion. The water was still dripping from the ceiling. The walls were defaced.
"What are we going to do with this place, Arturo?" Carmen asked, wrapping her arm around his waist. "It’s ruined."
May you like
Arturo smiled, a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes for the first time in months.
"We are going to sell it, Carmen," Arturo said. "We will sell the land, and we will use every single peso to build something that actually matters. But first... we have one final piece of business to take care of."
