Chapter 6 - THE DEAD SPEAKThe contents of Dr. Catherine Hayes’s file weren't corporate documents; they were medical evaluations, psychiatric hit-pieces forged by a corrupt clinic in New Jersey, and a handwritten diary detailing a desperate struggle against corporate sabotage.

"Listen to this," I said, reading aloud from the yellowed pages of the journal as Daniel recorded every word on his tablet. "November 14th. Jason tried to force me to alter the clinical trial toxicity data for the neural-regeneration formula. When I refused, threatening to report the safety violations to the FDA, he told me I would never work in medicine again. He said he had ways of making people disappear—not physically, but professionally, socially, and legally."
I pulled out a second document: a notarized settlement agreement signed under extreme duress, wherein Dr. Hayes surrendered her research credentials, her home, and her life savings in exchange for a terrifying gag order that threatened lifelong imprisonment if she ever spoke my maiden name or Jason's.
"He didn't just abuse me," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "He built his entire medical empire on a foundation of crushed lives, stolen patents, and silenced whistleblowers."
"This changes everything," Daniel said, his professional demeanor evaporating into fierce indignation. "This isn't just a RICO expansion or a corporate fraud case anymore. This is systemic criminal conspiracy resulting in wrongful imprisonment and professional destruction across multiple state lines."
"And the best part?" I stood up, holding the file tightly against my chest. "Jason thought he had destroyed every physical copy of these records. He thought by locking them in a private vault, he had absolute control over the dead."
Before Daniel could answer, my cell phone buzzed violently on the mahogany desk.
It was an unknown number, routed through an encrypted federal relay.
I swiped the screen and pressed it to my ear.
"Mrs. Mitchell?" a crisp, authoritative voice spoke through the speaker. "This is Special Agent Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, White-Collar Crime Division."
"Agent Vance," I replied steadily. "I assume you're calling about the asset freezes?"
"Not just the assets, Mrs. Mitchell. We've been analyzing the preliminary contents of the briefcase seized from your husband yesterday. We found something... unexpected. A series of encrypted offshore wire transfers routed to accounts tied to several high-ranking state health officials and members of the federal drug regulatory board."
A slow, triumphant smile curved across my lips.
"Let me guess, Agent Vance," I said softly, looking out across the Manhattan skyline as the morning sun finally burned through the heavy fog. "Those wire transfers match the exact dates when Mitchell Medical’s toxic drug trials were mysteriously granted fast-track federal approval."
"Exact matches down to the minute," the agent replied. "Your husband didn't just run a corrupt company, Mrs. Mitchell. He built a cartel disguised as a pharmaceutical corporation. And right now... the entire federal government is coming down on his head."
"Good," I said. "Tell me when you're ready to raid the remaining subsidiary offices. I have a complete master key list right here in my hand."
May you like
"We'll be at your office in twenty minutes, Mrs. Mitchell."
"I'll be waiting."
