Chapter 6 - The Betrayal in Plain SightThe grand steps of City Hall were packed with hundreds of supporters, journalists, and security personnel. American flags fluttered in the morning breeze, and giant banners reading VICTOR VANCE: INTEGRITY FOR OUR FUTURE hung from the stone pillars.

Victor Vance stood at the podium—a powerful man in his late sixties, with silver hair, a ruthless posture, and a smile that looked engineered in a PR studio. Beside him stood the State Attorney General, legal aides, and Arthur Sterling, who was scanning the crowd like a hawk.

I moved through the crowd in a sharp suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase. Laurel was positioned near the press riser, wearing a low hat and oversized sunglasses, holding Dash tightly in her arms.

“...And so, as we look toward a brighter tomorrow,” Victor’s voice boomed through the loudspeakers, “we must eliminate the corruption that has plagued our legal systems!”

The crowd erupted in applause.

I made my move. I bypassed the security rope using my bar association credential badge, slipping past a distracted police officer, and stepped onto the side stairs of the main stage.

Arthur Sterling caught sight of me immediately. His eyes widened in shock, and he reached into his jacket to signal the private security detail.

“Victor Vance!” I shouted, stepping directly onto the stage, pulling a stack of legal documents and the micro-drive from my briefcase. “I am serving you with an emergency federal subpoena and a petition for protective custody of the rightful heir to Vance Enterprises!”

The crowd gasped. Flashbulbs went off in a blinding frenzy. Camera crews swung their lenses away from Victor and slammed them onto me.

“Security! Remove this lunatic!” Victor barked, his smile instantly turning into a snarl.

Two heavy security guards lunged toward me, but I dodged left, thrusting the documents directly into the chest of the State Attorney General, who stood frozen in utter shock.

“Attorney General Davis!” I yelled over the chaos. “That envelope contains digital evidence of Julian Vance’s murder, offshore bribery, and the official legal paternity documents of Dashiel Vance! It’s all verified!”

The Attorney General looked down at the documents, his eyes growing wider by the second.

Suddenly, a voice boomed from the back of the stage through a secondary microphone.

“Don’t listen to him, Attorney General!”

I spun around. Standing beside Arthur Sterling was someone I never expected to see.

It was my own senior law partner—the man who owned the firm I worked for—Marcus Thorne.

My heart sank into my stomach.

“Marcus?” I gasped.

Marcus stepped forward, looking at me with a mix of pity and cold corporate greed. “I’m sorry, Michael. You’re a great attorney, but you’re naive. Did you really think your small firm could survive without Vance Enterprises funding our foundation?”

Marcus turned to the reporters, raising his hands. “Ladies and gentlemen of the press! My associate, Michael Vance, has been suffering from a severe psychological breakdown over the past forty-eight hours. He kidnapped this young boy from a public park yesterday! He is unfit, unstable, and acting under delusion!”

The crowd murmured in horror. The narrative was spinning out of control in seconds. The press began scribbling furiously: Lawyer Suffers Mental Breakdown on Live TV.

Victor Vance stepped back up to the microphone, his polished smile returning effortlessly. “It is a tragic situation when mental health strikes our legal community. Officers, please take Mr. Vance into custody for the safety of everyone here.”

Two officers grabbed my arms, pinning them behind my back. I struggled against their grip, screaming into the sea of cameras. “Check the drive! Check the drive in the envelope!”

It was over. They had flipped the narrative. I was going to be committed to a psychiatric facility, and Laurel and Dash would be picked up quietly in the aftermath.

Then, a small voice echoed through the massive PA system.
