Chapter 1 - THE TAPE THAT DESTROYED EVERYTHING

The crackling voice from the broken camera echoed off the stained-glass windows of the grand cathedral, cutting through the horrified silence of two hundred wealthy guests.
“…After the wedding, I’ll take control of her trust fund. The foolish girl thinks I actually love her. Once the papers are signed, we lock her away in the private clinic, just like we planned with her mother.”
The voice belonged undeniably to Julian Vance—the groom.
The bride, Clara Sterling, felt her world shatter into a thousand jagged pieces. Her breath hitched, tears freezing on her pale cheeks. Beside her, Julian’s refined composure instantly disintegrated. His sharp face twisted into something terrifying.
“Turn that damn thing off!” Julian roared, lunging forward to grab the small device from Clara’s hands.
“Don’t you dare touch her!”
Before security could intervene, Clara’s older brother, Mark, stormed up the aisle, shoving Julian back with enough force to send him stumbling into the floral arrangements. The crowd erupted into chaos. Whispers exploded into shouting. Cameras from the high-society guests flashed relentlessly.
Clara dropped to her knees, looking directly into the terrified eyes of the dirty little girl hiding behind her white dress. The child’s hands were scraped, and her clothes were stained with soot.
“What is your name, sweetie?” Clara asked, her voice trembling but steadying.
“Lily…” the girl sobbed, holding onto Clara’s silk train. “He… he burned our house down this morning because my papa recorded him talking to a bad man. Papa told me to run to the church. He said you were the only one who could stop him.”
Clara’s blood ran cold. Burned her house down?
She slowly stood up, turning to face the man she was supposed to promise her life to. Julian was straightening his tuxedo, trying desperately to regain control of his narrative. He put on a heartbroken mask, his eyes glistening with fake tears.
“Clara, sweetheart, listen to me,” Julian pleaded, taking a cautious step forward. “That audio is AI-generated! It’s a deepfake! Someone is trying to sabotage our family alliance. You know how ruthless the corporate world is. You can’t believe a street urchin over the man you love!”
For a second, the room went dead quiet. Guests exchanged doubtful glances. Deepfakes were common nowadays—could Julian be telling the truth?
Julian saw the hesitation in the crowd and pressed his advantage. “Security! Escort this child out and call child protective services immediately. She’s trespassing!”
Two large guards stepped forward, but Clara held up her hand, her eyes blazing with a cold, terrifying rage Julian had never seen before.
“If anyone touches this child, I will have the Sterling family lawyers destroy your lives before the sun sets today,” Clara declared, her voice ringing clear through the cathedral. She looked straight into Julian’s panic-stricken eyes. “You mentioned my mother on that recording, Julian. My mother died in an asylum three years ago. You told me she suffered from early-onset dementia.”
“She did!” Julian stammered.
“Then why did the recording say ‘just like we planned with her mother’?” Clara asked, taking off her diamond engagement ring. She held it high above her head. “The wedding is off.”
She dropped the multi-million-dollar ring into the silver goblet of holy water on the altar.
“Mark,” Clara commanded her brother, “get Lily to a private hospital under an assumed name. Get our security team to seal my house. And call the District Attorney.”
Julian’s mask completely shattered. “Clara! You can’t leave! The merger papers are already signed by your board!”
Clara paused at the top of the aisle, looking back over her shoulder at the man who had tricked her for three years.

“Then I guess I’ll just have to burn your empire to the ground to tear them up.”
She grabbed Lily’s small hand and walked down the aisle, her long white train dragging over the dirt left by the child’s feet—a trail of truth through a room full of lies.
