Chapter 6 - THE IMPENETRABLE TOWER

Midnight in Manhattan. Rain poured down the glassy facade of Vance Tower, an eighty-story skyscraper standing like a dark monolith in the heart of the city’s financial district.
Inside the top-floor penthouse suite, Julian Vance stood in front of a mirror, adjusting his black silk bowtie. Standing behind him was a tall, stern man in an expensive Italian suit—Marcus Vance, Julian’s uncle and the shadowy CEO of The Apex Group.
“Are you sure the girl and Clara were eliminated in the bunker?” Marcus asked, sipping an aperitif.
“My strike team reported the bunker collapsed with thermite charges,” Julian replied, smiling at his reflection. “Even if Clara survived, she’s a wanted fugitive. Police barricades are set up at every entrance to the city. She can’t step foot in Manhattan without being arrested.”
“Good,” Marcus said coldly. “The Apex Group has invested three billion dollars into this takeover. Tomorrow night at the Metropolitan Hotel, you will sign over the patents. If anything goes wrong, Julian, remember who gave you your power—and who can take it away.”
“Nothing will go wrong, Uncle,” Julian assured him. “The original contract is locked inside the digital safe down in the vault. The security systems are on lockdown.”
Little did Julian know, thirty floors below him, inside the building’s underground parking garage, a quiet breach was already underway.
A delivery van bearing the logo of a high-end catering company backed into the loading bay. The driver stepped out—it was Mark, wearing a waiter’s uniform.
In the back of the van, Clara was seated in front of a array of portable hacking monitors provided by Victor’s tech team.
“I’m in the building’s main server junction,” Mark reported into a tiny earpiece. “The security guards are distracted by the gala preparation shipments.”
“Good,” Clara whispered into her mic. “I’m initiating the bypass sequence now.”
She plugged a flash drive containing her mother’s encryption key into a portable transmitter. She typed in the birthdate: 09-14-1972.
For three terrifying seconds, the red status lights on her screen flashed ACCESS DENIED.
Clara’s heart stopped. Had Julian changed the code?
Suddenly, the screen blinked green.
OVERRIDE ACCEPTED. WELCOME, DR. ELEANOR STERLING.
Across the entire eighty-story tower, the security cameras looped a fifteen-minute pre-recorded feed. The biometric laser grids in the basement vault blinked off one by one.
“The path to the vault is clear,” Clara said, pulling on a black tactical jumpsuit. “Victor, are your men in position?”
From the rooftop of the adjacent skyscraper, Victor’s voice came through the comms. “We’re watching the sky, Clara. Apex has two helicopters waiting on the helipad to move the signed documents after the gala tomorrow. You have twenty minutes to pull the physical hard drives from that vault before their automated security audit runs.”
Clara stepped out of the van, moving like a shadow through the quiet concrete corridors. She reached the heavy steel vault door on the subterranean level.
She pressed her hand against the scanner. The system recognized the master administrative privilege left behind by her mother. The massive steel bolts retracted with a loud, heavy CLANK.
The door slid open.
Inside the vault sat rows of metallic storage servers and a central glass case containing the physical, signed master deeds of Sterling Global, along with something else Clara didn't expect to see.
On the central desk lay a thick black binder labeled: PROJECT LAZARUS: ELEANOR STERLING.
Clara’s hands shook as she opened the binder. Inside were medical reports, photos, and chemical formulas.
Her breath caught in her throat. Her mother hadn't died of illness.
Her mother had been systematically poisoned over five years with a rare neurotoxin to simulate early dementia—administered by her personal physician, who was funded directly by The Apex Group.
“They killed her…” Clara whispered, tears filling her eyes as rage bubbled up from the depths of her soul. “They slowly murdered my mother.”
“Clara, get out of there!” Mark’s voice panicked over the earpiece. “The main elevator just activated! Someone is coming down!”
Clara grabbed the binder, snatched the master flash drive from the central server, and stuffed them into her bag. But before she could step out of the vault, the heavy steel door slammed shut in front of her.
The red emergency lights flashed violently.

Over the vault’s intercom, a familiar, chilling voice laughed.
“Did you really think I wouldn't notice a master administrative login using your dead mother’s birthday, Clara?” Julian’s voice echoed through the speakers. “I was waiting for you.”
