Chapter 3 - THE HUNTED BRIDE

The next morning, Manhattan was hit by a blinding rainstorm. By 6:00 AM, heavy police cruisers with flashing red and blue lights pulled up in front of the penthouse building.
Standing beside the lead detective was Julian Vance, looking solemn and wearing a black trench coat.
“She’s extremely volatile, Detective,” Julian told the officer softly, making sure the nearby news reporters caught every word. “She lost her mother to the same severe illness. I just want her to get the medical help she desperately needs.”
The officers rushed up the private elevator and smashed through the doors of the penthouse, guns drawn.
“Clara Sterling! We have a court-ordered medical warrant!” the detective announced.
They burst into the master bedroom—only to find it completely empty. On the velvet bed lay Clara’s white wedding gown, slashed into pieces with a pair of shears, with a message written across the mirror in red lipstick:
SEE YOU IN COURT, GROOM.
Ten miles away, an unmarked black SUV sped down the muddy back roads toward the industrial docks of New Jersey. Inside, Clara was wearing a black hoodie and jeans, her hair dyed dark brown. Beside her was Mark, driving, while Lily slept peacefully in the backseat.
“Where are we going?” Mark asked nervously, checking the rearview mirror for followers. “Every cop in the state is looking for you. Julian used his political connections to put out a missing person’s warrant, claiming you’re a danger to yourself.”
“We’re going to see the one person Julian fears more than the law,” Clara said, pulling up a encrypted file on a secure tablet. “Victor Sterling.”
Mark hit the brakes hard, bringing the SUV to a screeching halt on the shoulder of the road.
“Victor? Our uncle?” Mark shouted, staring at her in disbelief. “Clara, are you out of your mind? Victor was banished from the family ten years ago! Mom stripped him of his inheritance because he was involved with underground cartels! He’s a monster!”
“He’s an evil monster, yes,” Clara said coldly. “But he’s our monster. And right now, we need someone who doesn't play by the rules of society, because Julian has bought society.”
She held up the tablet, showing a list of transactions. “Look at this, Mark. I analyzed the micro-SD card from Lily’s father last night. Victor wasn’t banished because he stole money from Mom. He was framed by Julian’s father fifteen years ago to clear the way for Vance Enterprises to infiltrate our family!”
Mark stared at the screen in shock. The ledger showed intricate bank transfers spanning two decades. The Vance family had been plotting to eradicate the Sterling bloodline for a generation.
“Victor has been hiding in the shadows, waiting for revenge,” Clara said softly. “It’s time we give him the key to tear Julian apart.”
Mark took a deep breath, shifted the SUV back into drive, and slammed his foot on the accelerator.
Thirty minutes later, they arrived at a derelict shipping yard near the coast. Rusting containers were stacked three stories high under the pouring rain. Armed men in black tactical gear stepped out from behind the crates, pointing heavy rifles at the vehicle.
Clara stepped out of the SUV alone, holding her hands in the air.
“I am Clara Sterling,” she shouted above the roar of the wind and rain. “Tell my uncle I’ve brought him the head of Vance Enterprises on a silver platter.”
The armed men made a path. From behind a stack of containers walked an older man with graying hair, a scarred jawline, and eyes as cold as steel. He leaned heavily on a silver-headed cane, looking at Clara with a mixture of amusement and curiosity.

“Well, well,” Victor Sterling barked, his voice rough. “My little niece comes crawling to the black sheep of the family. I saw the news, Clara. You made a complete fool of yourself at the altar.”
“I didn't come here for pity, Uncle Victor,” Clara said, stepping closer without showing an ounce of fear. “I came to offer you a war.”
