Chapter 8 - The Final ConfessionThe courtroom held its collective breath.

Emily gripped the edges of the wooden podium, her knuckles turning white. She didn't look at the judge. She didn't look at the jury. She looked only at me.
"You all think I'm a monster," she said, a bitter, broken laugh escaping her lips. "You look at the ledgers, the prescriptions, the poison, and you see a cold-blooded killer. But none of you know what it’s like to stand in the shadow of a ghost."
She took a sharp breath.
"I loved Julian before Nicole ever laid eyes on him in college," Emily continued, her voice rising in pitch. "I built him. I supported his early real estate ventures when he had nothing. And then Nicole stepped in, batting her innocent eyelashes, and walked away with the prize that was rightfully mine!"
The judge banged his gavel. "Order in the courtroom! Mrs. Moretti, confine your remarks to relevant legal arguments."
"There are no legal arguments left," Emily snarled, glaring at the judge before snapping her gaze back to me. "I wanted his children, Julian! I wanted to give you the family Nicole couldn't! Even if I had to dose your coffee to keep you compliant, to keep you weak, to keep you dependent on my care—I did it out of devotion!"
I didn't flinch. I didn't blink. I simply stared back at her with a chilling, absolute void where pity used to live.
"Devotion doesn't look like a pharmacy receipt, Emily," I said quietly, though my voice carried clearly across the silent courtroom.
Emily let out a piercing shriek of pure rage, lunging forward before the bailiefs tackled her to the floor, pinning her arms behind her back as they dragged her screaming toward the holding cells.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off her voice.
Silence descended upon the courtroom once more.
