Chapter 7 - The Trap at 11th and State

The rain drummed a relentless tattoo against the reinforced glass of the Central District Police Precinct lobby. Nora sat on a hard plastic bench, her fingers tightly clutching a brown paper envelope containing the locket. Her paramedic ID badge was pinned to her jacket, giving her legitimate cover as someone dropping off recovered personal effects.

Her pulse pounded in her ears. Every cop walking past looked like a potential executioner.

"Ms. Callahan?" a voice called out.

Nora looked up. A tired-looking man in his late fifties with rumpled civilian clothes and weary eyes stood by the double doors of the internal affairs office. It was Captain Miller.

"I’m Captain Miller. You wanted to see me about some recovered property?"

Nora stood up, her knees slightly trembling, but her voice held firm. "I found this in a grocery store yesterday. It belongs to... someone who asked me to make sure it reached an honest pair of hands."

Miller took the envelope, peering inside. He slid the silver locket out, his eyes widening as he recognized the insignia engraved on the back. "Good God. Where did you get this?"

Before Miller could finish his sentence, the heavy security doors of the precinct lobby blew inward with a deafening crash.
