Chapter 3 - The Clock Strikes Forty-ThreeThe rain had intensified into a heavy Pacific Northwest downpour by the time Madison and Ethan hurried across the slick concrete courtyard toward a sleek black private limousine waiting by the curb.

Driver in a crisp black suit. Rear doors wide open. A discreet little sign on the dashboard indicating a VIP rental for a private chapel ceremony in downtown Seattle.

Forty-three minutes.

That was the exact amount of time elapsed between Judge Harrison’s gavel falling and the moment Ethan Vance would legally bind himself to Madison Blake.

I stood under the wide concrete overhang of the courthouse entrance, my mother standing protectively beside me with an umbrella. My phone buzzed in my coat pocket.

It was a text from Marcus: Documents successfully filed with the King County Clerk’s Office. The corporate freeze has been triggered. Federal notification sent to the trust administrator.

A slow, cold smile spread across my face.

Across the courtyard, Ethan paused with his hand on the open door of the limousine. He turned back one last time, catching my eye through the curtain of falling rain. He raised his hand in a patronizing, mocking two-finger salute—a silent gesture of absolute victory.

Madison flashed a brilliant, triumphant smile, her diamond bracelet—bought with the very corporate discretionary funds Ethan had hidden from our joint accounts—catching the gray light. Then they ducked inside, and the heavy door slammed shut.

"They look happy," my mother muttered bitterly, watching the limo pull away from the curb, its tail lights bleeding red into the wet gray pavement. "Ignorance truly is bliss."

"Let them have their forty-three minutes of bliss, Mom," I said, turning away from the street. "Because the bill is about to arrive."

We walked down the side ramp toward the underground parking garage, where my mother’s Lexus waited. As we slid into the warmth of the leather seats, my phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn't a text. It was an email notification from Vance & Sterling Legal Associates, marked with a high-priority red exclamation mark.

I opened it, scanning the brief, devastating preview: URGENT: Notice of Asset Freezing and Probate Investigation.

"Should we head back to the office?" my mother asked, starting the engine. "Or do you want to go home and rest?"

I looked down at my phone, watching the timestamp tick over to 10:45 AM—precisely forty-three minutes after my signature finalized my freedom.

"No, Mom," I said, closing the laptop screen with a quiet click. "We aren't going home yet. We’re going to a very nice restaurant downtown. I want a front-row seat to the earthquake."
