Chapter 5 - The Secret Ledger

Three days had passed since Victor’s arrest.

The storm had cleared, leaving Willow Creek Ranch blanketed in a pristine, blinding layer of fresh snow that sparkled under the afternoon Kentucky sun. Inside the nursery, the air was warm and smelled faintly of lavender baby lotion. Sophie, Lily, and Grace were wide awake, kicking their tiny legs in their cribs and cooing happily as Emma sat in the rocking chair, softly humming a lullaby.

I stood in the doorway, a cup of black coffee in my hand, watching the scene unfold with a sense of peace I hadn't felt since before Claire died.

For the first time in three years, the house felt alive. The oppressive shadow that Victor had cast over the estate had vanished, replaced by Emma’s quiet competence and warm energy. She had already audited the household staff, restructured the security protocols, and fired the compromised night nurses, replacing them with trusted professionals vetted through her own channels.

My satellite phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw a secure text from Marcus: We unlocked Victor's encrypted offline hard drive from his private vault. You need to see this immediately.

Ten minutes later, I was sitting at my desk with Marcus standing over my shoulder as lines of encrypted data decrypted on the screen.

"It's not just embezzlement, boss," Marcus said, scrolling through a massive digital ledger. "Victor wasn't just stealing from your accounts. He was acting as a front for a larger agricultural cartel based out of Louisville—the Blackwood Syndicate."

My eyes scanned the screen, and my blood ran cold.

The Blackwood Syndicate wasn't just a corporate investment firm. They were a ruthless land-acquisition syndicate known for using fabricated debts, forced foreclosures, and targeted assassinations to seize ancestral ranches across Kentucky. And right at the top of their target list, highlighted in bold red letters, was Willow Creek Ranch.

"They wanted the valley water rights," Marcus explained, pointing to a schematic map of our underground aquifers. "Whoever controls the Willow Creek basin controls the irrigation and hydro-power for the entire county. Victor was planted here five years ago to infiltrate your life, marry into the estate through Claire—or manipulate you if she passed—and systematically strip the land away from underneath you."

My grip on the edge of the desk tightened until my knuckles turned white. "Claire... Claire didn't die of natural complications during childbirth."

Marcus fell silent, his expression grim. "The medical examiner's report from three years ago was signed off by Dr. Evans—a physician heavily in debt to the Blackwood Syndicate. We're having Claire's body exhumed for an independent toxicology screening as we speak."

The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

Claire hadn't just been a tragic casualty of a difficult birth. She had been murdered. Slowly, systematically poisoned to clear the path for Victor and his syndicate to seize control of our family legacy.

"Get our tactical teams on high alert," I ordered, my voice trembling with a cold, terrifying fury. "If the Blackwood Syndicate realizes Victor is locked up and talking, they won't wait for the legal system to play out. They're going to come for us."

Before Marcus could reply, the main security alarm on my desk let out a shrill, piercing shriek.

Red emergency strobe lights began flashing across the entire ranch. On the perimeter monitor, three heavy black SUVs came barreling through our security gates, smashing through the reinforced steel barrier as if it were made of paper.

Men in tactical black gear, armed with submachine guns, poured out of the vehicles, swarming toward the main house.

"Boss!" Marcus yelled, drawing his sidearm. "They're here!"
