Chapter 6 - Siege at Willow Creek

"Emma!" I roared, abandoning the desk and sprinting down the hallway toward the nursery.
The heavy oak door burst open just as Emma stepped out, her face instantly pale as the sound of shattering glass echoed from the front foyer.
"What's happening?" she asked, her voice tight but remarkably controlled.
"The Blackwood Syndicate," I said, grabbing her by the shoulders and pulling her into the secure panic room hidden behind the master bookshelf—a room Victor had supposedly designed for 'emergencies,' but which I now realized had likely been engineered with a back-door vulnerability. "They're attacking the house. Get the babies inside the vault now!"
Without a single word of panic, Emma scooped up Sophie and Lily while I scooped up Grace, rushing us into the reinforced steel chamber. I slammed the heavy vault door shut, spinning the manual combination lock and dropping the deadbolts into place.
It was thick enough to withstand a tactical bomb blast, but it had one fatal flaw: air circulation. The intake valve was routed directly through the basement mechanical room—the exact room Victor had tampered with before.
Outside the heavy steel door, the sounds of war erupted.
Gunshots cracked through the hallways, the deep, heavy thud of automatic fire tearing through drywall and shattering antique glass. Marcus and his elite team were holding the line in the grand foyer, but the syndicate operatives outnumbered them three to one.
"Daniel," Emma whispered, her hand resting reassuringly on my arm as we sat in the dim, emergency-lit interior of the vault. "They're not just here to destroy the ranch. They're here to erase everyone who knows the truth."
"They won't get past the vault," I said, though my mind raced desperately. The vault was safe from bullets, but if they cut the power to the ranch generator—which was currently rumbling outside—the air filtration system would shut down within twenty minutes.
And sure enough, a loud thud echoed from the basement, followed immediately by the dying whine of the backup generator winding down to a complete stop.
The emergency lights in the vault flickered once, twice, and then went pitch black. Only a faint, battery-powered red indicator glowed in the corner.
The ventilation fans whirred to a halt. The air in the small room immediately began to grow heavy, stale, and warm.
"They cut the power," Emma murmured, her voice steady despite the encroaching dark. "They're going to try and smoke us out or flood the intake with gas."
"Not while I'm breathing," I said, standing up in the cramped dark. I reached up and unscrewed the ceiling maintenance hatch that led directly into the ventilation shaft—a narrow metal tube designed for emergency maintenance.
"What are you doing?" Emma gasped, grabbing my sleeve. "You can't go out there!"
"If I don't reset the manual bypass valve in the utility basement, we'll suffocate in here within fifteen minutes," I said, looking down into her dark eyes. "Protect my daughters, Emma. If I don't come back..."
May you like
"You are coming back," she interrupted fiercely, her hand gripping my wrist with surprising strength. "Because if you don't, I'm coming out of this vault with a hunting rifle to finish what you started."
A fierce, desperate grin crossed my face. I squeezed her hand, pulled myself up into the narrow metal shaft, and began crawling into the pitch-black labyrinth of the ranch’s ventilation system.
