Chapter 2 - The Sound of FootstepsThe heavy oak front door swung open before the housekeeper could even cross the foyer.

Step. Step. Step.

The rhythmic, authoritative sound of heavy leather shoes echoed on the Italian marble floor. The distinct, crisp rustle of high-grade legal documents preceded them.

Adrian stood up from his chair, his face flushing with a mix of indignation and sudden, creeping unease. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private residence! You have no right—"

The words died in his throat as three figures walked into the dining room.

At the front was Commissioner Raymond Cole of the city police department, his uniform pressed to absolute perfection, his expression carved from stone. Right behind him was Dr. Chen, carrying a specialized medical trauma kit, accompanied by two uniformed officers who immediately secured the exits.

And trailing just behind them was a tall, silver-haired man carrying a heavy leather briefcase—Marcus Vance, the senior managing partner of Vance & Associates, the most ruthless corporate legal firm in the state.

Celeste dropped her wineglass. It shattered against the hardwood floor, spilling dark red liquid like a stain spreading across a pristine white carpet.

"Commissioner Cole?" Adrian stammered, his color draining entirely as he forced a weak, nervous smile. "To what do we owe the honor? There must be some mistake. Is this about a neighborhood complaint? My security system—"

Commissioner Cole didn't even look at Adrian. He walked straight past him, his eyes scanning the room until they landed on me. He gave a sharp, respectful nod.

"Madam Prosecutor," Cole said, his voice deep and commanding. "You requested an immediate presence. We arrived as fast as humanly possible."

The entire room went dead silent. Even the air seemed to freeze.

Madam Prosecutor?

Adrian’s eyes darted wildly between Commissioner Cole and me. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "Prosecutor? What is he talking about? You’re... you’re just Emily’s mother. You retired years ago! You’re a homemaker—a retired art collector!"

I walked over to Emily’s chair, gently placing a protective hand on her uninjured shoulder. I looked back at Adrian, my gaze sharp enough to draw blood.

"Did you really think, Adrian, that because I stepped away from the active trial courtroom to take care of my own family after my husband passed, I forgot how to build a case?" I asked, my voice ringing clear and cold across the room. "Did you think a man who beats his wife in the privacy of a gated estate could hide behind wealth and privilege?"

Adrian backed up a step, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "She fell! She tripped over the kitchen island! Ask her! Emily, tell them!"

Emily raised her head. The fear in her eyes was gone, replaced by a sudden, fierce spark of absolute truth. She looked her husband dead in the eye.

"I never fell, Adrian," Emily said, her voice clear, echoing off the high ceilings. "You broke my arm because I tried to leave the room while you were screaming at me. You threw me against the pantry door."

"You lying bitch—" Adrian snarled, lunging forward with a raised fist.

It was a fatal mistake.

Before Adrian could take another step, the two uniformed officers moved with lightning speed. In a fraction of a second, Adrian Westbrook—the untouchable, arrogant corporate heir—was slammed face-down onto his own dining table, his arms wrenched behind his back with a sharp click of steel handcuffs.

"Adrian Westbrook!" Commissioner Cole’s voice boomed like thunder. "You are under arrest for domestic assault, infliction of severe bodily harm, and intimidation. You have the right to remain silent..."

Celeste shrieked, slamming her hands onto the table. "You can't do this! Do you know who we are? My son is the COO of Westbrook Industries! He is untouchable! You’ll all be ruined by morning!"

Marcus Vance, the corporate attorney, stepped forward, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with a cold, terrifying smile. He opened his heavy leather briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of documents, and laid them neatly on the table right over the roast beef.

"Actually, Mrs. Westbrook," Vance said smoothly, "your son is about to experience a very different kind of reality. Let me introduce you to the real owners of Westbrook Industries."
