Chapter 6 - The Secondary VaultThe room seemed to shrink as Thomas’s words hung heavily in the air.

Celeste stared at her younger son in absolute horror, her mouth working silently as she tried to process the betrayal. "Thomas... what are you saying? You... you stole from the company? From your own family?"
"Family?" Thomas spat the word out like a foul taste, his eyes flashing with sudden, venomous hatred. "Family is just a corporate structure to you, Mother. You and Father spent my entire childhood treating Adrian like the golden god and treating me like the shadow. Well, the shadow just swallowed the sun."
I didn't flinch. I kept my posture rigid, my eyes locked onto the cryptographic hardware wallet sitting on the table.
"You’re clever, Thomas," I said, my voice steady, cutting through his theatrical monologue. "You waited until Adrian took the fall, assuming that once the police hauled him away and the emergency injunction froze his personal assets, you could slip out the back door with the offshore reserves and vanish."
Thomas’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second—just a micro-expression of surprise that I hadn't panicked.
"You can't touch those funds, Eleanor," Thomas sneered, stepping closer to the edge of the table. "The private keys are encrypted with military-grade multi-sig protocols. Without my private biometric signature and the master cipher, those millions are locked forever. Even your high-priced corporate lawyer friend can't claw back what doesn't exist on paper."
Emily clutched my arm, her voice shaking. "Mom... don't let him get away. He helped Adrian cover up... he knew what Adrian was doing to me."
I looked down at my daughter, giving her a reassuring nod, before turning my gaze back to Thomas.
"Who said anything about lawyers, Thomas?" I asked quietly.
Before Thomas could react, the front doors burst open again. But this time, it wasn't the local police department.
The heavy tactical boots hitting the marble floor belonged to federal agents in full black Kevlar gear—the FBI’s Cyber Crimes and Financial Intelligence Division. Leading them was Director Vance—not Marcus Vance the civil lawyer, but his brother, Special Agent-in-Charge Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"Thomas Westbrook," Agent Vance’s voice boomed through the estate, cold and absolute. "You are under arrest for international money laundering, corporate wire fraud, and conspiracy to obstruct federal investigations."
Thomas went rigid. The color vanished from his face as he spun around toward the hallway, only to find his escape route completely sealed by four heavily armed federal agents.
"No! That's impossible!" Thomas shrieked, lunging backward toward the duffel bag. "You can't track those keys! I wiped the servers!"
"You wiped the local servers, yes," Agent Vance said, stepping forward and flashing a federal arrest warrant right in Thomas's face. "Which is why Madam Prosecutor quietly routed a real-time network tap through the household router the moment she sat down at this table and called Dr. Chen."
Thomas froze, his eyes widening in pure terror as he looked back at me.
"You... you called Dr. Chen as a decoy?" Thomas whispered, his voice trembling.
"Dr. Chen is a licensed forensic medical examiner," I said calmly, stepping forward as the federal agents tackled Thomas to the floor and slapped federal handcuffs on his wrists. "And he’s also a certified cybersecurity consultant for the federal prosecutor's office. It’s amazing what a secure mobile hotspot can do when plugged into an unencrypted home network while everyone is distracted by a dinner table argument."
Thomas was hauled away, screaming incoherently about encrypted keys and rigged systems, his grand scheme collapsing into dust before it had even left the property.
Celeste collapsed entirely onto the floor, sobbing uncontrollably as the grand illusion of the Westbrook dynasty shattered into absolute nothingness around her.
Emily breathed a massive sigh of relief, leaning her head against my shoulder.

"It’s over, sweetheart," I whispered, wrapping my arms around her. "You’re safe now."
Just as the federal agents began clearing the estate, my phone buzzed again with an urgent alert from the district attorney's office. I glanced down, and my blood ran ice cold once more.
