Chapter 4 - THE WRONG VICTIMDante’s aura instantly shifted from dark intimacy to cold, calculated violence. He shoved me gently behind his back, shielding me as he turned to Marco.

"What package?" Dante demanded.
"A wooden box," Marco replied, his voice tight. "We scanned it for explosives. It's clean. But... you need to see what's inside."
Three minutes later, we were standing in Dante’s high-security study upstairs. The room was lined with dark mahogany bookshelves, bulletproof glass, and monitors displaying the estate's perimeter. On the center of Dante’s massive oak desk sat a crude pine box, its lid already pried open by the security team.
Dante stepped up to the desk, his hands resting on the edge. I hovered behind him, fear clutching my throat like a vice.
Inside the box lay a single, blood-stained engagement ring resting on top of a polaroid photograph.
I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth.
The photograph showed a man tied to a wooden chair in a dark, concrete room. His face was bruised, his clothes torn, and his eyes wild with terror.
It was Michael. My ex-fiance.
"Oh God," I choked out, tears instantly blinding my vision. "Michael..."
Dante picked up the polaroid, turning it over. On the back, written in thick black marker, were the words: AN EYE FOR AN EYE. A LIFE FOR A LIFE. BRING US THE WAITRESS, OR THE BOY DIES NEXT.
"Who is this?" Dante growled, his voice vibrating with suppressed fury as he whirled around to face me.
"That's... that's Michael," I sobbed, clutching my elbows as my body shook. "My ex. He... he left me six months ago. He owed money to bookies, to bad people... I thought he ran away!"
"He didn't run away," Marco put in grimly. "The Syndicate picked him up three months ago. They've been holding him as collateral for his gambling debts. When you saved young Matteo, they did a background check on you and realized they already owned your ex-fiance."
Dante tossed the photograph back into the box with absolute contempt. "He's a ghost. A non-entity. Ignore it."
"Ignore it?!" I shrieked, horror surging through me. "Dante, they're going to kill him!"
"He is nothing to you!" Dante barked, stepping toward me, his dark eyes flashing with cold rage. "You said it yourself—he abandoned you! He stole your engagement ring, left you with his debts, and fled like a rat! Why do you care if he bleeds?"
"Because he's a human being!" I screamed back, tears spilling down my cheeks. "Not everyone is a cold-blooded monster like you! I can't just let someone die because of a choice I made!"
Dante grabbed my upper arms, his grip firm but not painful, pulling me flush against his chest. "Listen to me, Clara! This is a trap! They want you out in the open. They know if they get their hands on you, I will have to burn down half the city to get you back!"
I froze. My breath caught in my throat as his words echoed in the heavy silence of the study.
I will have to burn down half the city to get you back.
"Why?" I whispered, my heart thumping wildly against my ribs. "Why would you do that for me? I'm just a waitress."
Dante looked down at me, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. His dark eyes softened for a fraction of a second, revealing a raw, terrifying vulnerability that he quickly buried.
"Because you belong to me now," Dante growled low in his throat. "Not to the Syndicate. Not to your pathetic ex-fiance. To me. And nobody takes what is mine."
Before I could process the possessive, overwhelming weight of his declaration, the desk phone rang. A sharp, shrill sound that cut through the tension like a blade.
Dante didn't break eye contact with me as he reached out and hit the speaker button.
"Moretti," Dante answered coldly.
A distorted, electronically modified voice rasped through the speaker. "I see you got our present, Dante. Such a lovely girl, your new little bird. It's a shame her past is so noisy."
"State your business, Victor," Dante said calmly, identifying the head of the Syndicate instantly. "Before I send my men to tear your territory apart brick by brick."
"Oh, you won't be doing that," Victor sneered through the speaker. "Because Miss Vance is going to make a choice. Tonight. A trade. She walks into the abandoned docks at midnight, alone, in exchange for her dear Michael. If she isn't there by twelve... we don't just kill her ex-fiance. We send a hit squad to Matteo's school tomorrow morning."

The line went dead with a sharp click.
Silence descended on the room like a heavy shroud. I looked at Dante, whose face had turned into a mask of pure, unadulterated death.
