Chapter 7 - THE RECKONINGThe ride back to the estate was filled with a suffocating silence.

Dante sat across from me, his hands covered in dark blood—none of it his own. His face was a mask of cold, merciless rage. He didn't speak a word until we pulled into the gated driveway of the mansion.

The vehicle stopped, and Dante stepped out, yanking the door open for me. He grabbed my wrist—not roughly, but with an unyielding grip—and led me upstairs, straight into his master suite, slamming the heavy oak doors shut behind us.

"Strip," he commanded sharply.

I blinked, taken aback. "What?"

"Your clothes are soaked in rain and blood," Dante snapped, his voice tight as he paced toward the bathroom, grabbing a plush towel. "You're shivering. Get out of those clothes before you get sick."

My fingers were shaking so violently I couldn't unbutton my trench coat. Seeing my struggle, Dante let out a harsh breath, stepped over, and pushed my hands away. His large, warm fingers worked quickly, unbuttoning my coat, stripping off the heavy bulletproof vest, and tossing them to the floor.

When I was left in just my damp camisole and jeans, he stopped. His eyes drifted to my face, then down to my chest, which was heaving with quick, shallow breaths.

"You killed a man tonight," Dante said quietly, his tone shifting from anger to something far more complex.

"He was going to shoot me," I whispered, my voice trembling. "Michael... Michael shoved me right into him."

"Michael is a coward," Dante said coldly, stepping closer until his body heat radiated against my chilly skin. "He never deserved you. Not six months ago, and certainly not tonight."

"Why did I do it, Dante?" tears finally spilled over my lashes, hot and bitter. "Why do I keep trying to save people who don't give a damn about me? I saved your son, and I got locked in a cage. I tried to save my ex, and he used me as a shield. I'm so tired of being weak..."

"You are not weak," Dante growled, grabbing my face in both of his hands, forcing me to look directly into his blazing dark eyes. "You are the strongest, most infuriatingly brave woman I have ever met. You stepped into my world and didn't bow down to anyone. Not to me. Not to Victor. Not to death."

"Dante..." I breathed.

"I tried to keep you at arm's length," Dante whispered, his thumb caressing my cheekbone, wiping away a tear. "I told myself you were just a obligation. A debt to be paid for saving Matteo. But I was lying to myself."

Before I could reply, Dante lowered his head and captured my lips in a fierce, possessive kiss.

It wasn't gentle. It was a collision of fire, rain, adrenaline, and months of suppressed longing. I gasped against his mouth, my arms wrapping around his neck, pulling him closer as I surrendered to the dark, intoxicating rhythm of his touch. He lifted me effortlessly, setting me on the edge of the large marble vanity, his hands sliding down my back, pressing over the smooth, raised scars on my skin.

"You belong to me, Clara," Dante murmured against my lips, his breath ragged. "Not by a contract. Not by force. But because I will burn the entire world to ashes before I let anyone hurt you again."

"Prove it," I whispered back, pulling him into another deep, breathless kiss.

That night, in the heart of the monster's lair, I surrendered my past, my fear, and my heart to Dante Moretti. We surrendered to the fever between us, making love as if the morning would never come, as if the war outside these walls didn't exist.

But war never waits for anyone.

At 5:00 AM, while Dante slept soundly beside me—his heavy arm wrapped tightly around my waist, pulling me against his warm chest—my phone, lying on the nightstand, vibrated silently.

I carefully lifted Dante’s arm, slipped out of bed, and picked up the phone. It was an anonymous text message containing a single video file and a short line of text:

LOOK AT WHAT YOUR MOB BOSS IS HIDING, LITTLE WAITRESS.

With trembling fingers, I tapped the video file.

The screen flickered to life, showing a dark, hidden security footage timestamped from six months ago—the night Michael disappeared.

In the video, Michael was pinned against a wall in a dark alley. Standing over him, holding a heavy silencer-equipped pistol to Michael's forehead, was Dante Moretti.

Dante’s voice played softly through the speaker: "You will leave Clara. You will steal her ring, make her think you abandoned her, and you will never contact her again. If she ever finds out I paid off your debts to clear the path for me to take her... I will skin you alive."

The phone dropped from my lifeless fingers, shattering on the hardwood floor.

My breath caught in my throat. My blood ran completely cold.

Michael hadn't left me six months ago because he was a deadbeat. Dante Moretti had orchestrated my entire downfall. He had stalked me, isolated me, orchestrated my misery—all before I ever stepped foot near his son at Aurelio's.

I looked back at the bed, at the handsome, terrifying monster sleeping peacefully under the sheets.

The glass falling on Matteo hadn't been an accident. My saving the boy hadn't been a coincidence. I had never been a hero.

I was his prey.
