Chapter 5 - The Bail Hearing Betrayal

The court room was packed to maximum capacity for Grant’s emergency bail review hearing. News crews lined the back wall, their cameras focused on the defense table.

Grant was led in wearing a orange jumpsuit, his hands shackled to his waist. He looked gaunt, gray, and completely broken. The arrogant man who had pinned my hand to a red-hot burner three days ago was nowhere to be seen.

Across the aisle sat Elaine and Dennis, out on temporary bond for their lesser charges. They sat as far away from each other as humanly possible.

The pressure of the last seventy-two hours had cracked their united front.

“Your Honor,” Grant’s high-priced attorney, Mr. Sterling, began, stepping up to the podium. “My client is a respected business owner with deep roots in the community. The video in question, while tragic, lacks context. We argue that Mr. Montgomery was acting under extreme emotional distress and is not a flight risk. We request bail be set at a reasonable amount.”

The prosecutor stood up immediately. “Your Honor, the prosecution presents entry Exhibit A: the full fifteen-minute unedited feed. The defendant didn't just assault his wife; he premeditatedly tortured her while his family egged him on.”

Then, the judge turned to the defense gallery. “I understand the co-defendants wish to make a statement regarding bail securities?”

Elaine immediately stood up, stepping forward without her lawyer’s consent. Her face was red, her eyes swollen with tears.

“Your Honor!” Elaine cried out, pointing a trembling finger at her own son. “I want it on the record that I had no idea Grant was capable of such violence! He lied to us! He told us Clara was crazy! I was terrified of him too! He forced me to say those things on the video!”

Grant’s head snapped toward his mother, his eyes wide with shock. “Mom?! What are you talking about? You told me to put her in her place!”

“Shut up, Grant!” Dennis yelled, standing up beside her. “Your Honor, my son operated his business as a rogue entity! He used my name on loan documents without my permission! He ruined our family! We shouldn't be dragged down for his sick crimes!”

“DAD!” Grant screamed, straining against his handcuffs as officers rushed to hold him down. “You helped me hide the bank statements! You knew everything!”

“ORDER IN THE COURT!” Judge Vance banged her gavel repeatedly, her face dark with anger. “Silence!”

The entire courtroom watched in awe as the Montgomery family devoured itself alive. The love, loyalty, and united front they had used to isolate and abuse me for a year and a half evaporated the moment consequences arrived.

I sat in the front row, wearing a simple beige coat, watching the circus unfold.

Judge Vance leaned forward, looking down at Grant with utter contempt. “Bail is denied. The defendant will remain in custody until trial. As for Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery, your bail conditions are immediately revoked for court disturbance and potential witness tampering. Remand them all into custody.”

Elaine shrieked as female officers grabbed her arms. Dennis shouted for his lawyer as he was led away.

As Grant was pulled toward the side exit, he looked back at me, tears streaming down his face. “Clara! Please! Stop them! I love you!”

I didn't answer. I simply adjusted my bandage and turned my back on him.
