Chapter 8 - The Grand Mastermind Revealed

I smiled—a cold, brilliant smile that sent a shiver down Grant’s spine.
“Did you really think my grandmother didn't know who you were when you approached me at that conference three years ago?” I asked softly.
Dennis’s head snapped up, his pale eyes bulging with sudden terror. “What? Evelyn... Evelyn died before you met Grant!”
“Evelyn knew she was dying,” I whispered, leaning closer to Dennis. “And she knew you were watching her estate. She knew you were raising Grant to be a predator. So before she passed, she gave me a choice.”
I drew a small, old leather diary from my purse—the diary my grandmother had kept during her final months.
“She told me: ‘Clara, Dennis Montgomery will send his son for you. You can either run from them for the rest of your life... or you can open the door, let them think they’ve trapped you, and take back everything his family ever stole.’”
The courtroom around us seemed to vanish as the realization hit Dennis like a physical blow.
“You... you knew from the very beginning?” Dennis gasped, his voice cracking.
“Every insult, every financial restriction, every pathetic attempt Grant made to exert control—I let it happen,” I said, my voice dripping with icy triumph. “I waited until you put every single asset your family owned into Montgomery Construction. I waited until you merged your personal accounts with my dummy trust. I let Grant burn my hand because I needed a crime so undeniable, so graphic, that no judge on earth could grant you bail or leniency.”
Elaine let out a strangled, terrified shriek. “You... you burned yourself on purpose?!”
“I didn't want to get hurt,” I said, looking down at the faint, silver scar on my palm—a permanent badge of my victory. “But pain is temporary. Legacy is forever. My hand healed in three weeks. But your family will rot in state prison for the next forty years.”
I leaned in right next to Grant’s ear, hearing his frantic, shallow breathing.
“You thought you were training me to learn my place,” I whispered softly. “Now you know where my place is. On top of your ruined empire.”

I turned on my heel and walked out of the courtroom, the rhythmic click of my high heels echoing down the marble hallway. Behind me, the heavy steel doors slammed shut, sealing the Montgomery family away into darkness forever.
Outside, the bright afternoon sun washed over my face. I pulled off my medical wrap, tossed it into the nearest trash can, and stepped into my car, ready to live the rest of my life in absolute freedom.
