Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Legacy

Two weeks after the bail hearing, I was sitting in my grandmother’s old study at the Vance Estate—the property I had quietly moved back into.

Arthur Vance sat across from me, holding a thick leather folder that had been sealed in my grandmother’s vault for over a decade.

“Clara,” Arthur said, his tone unusually solemn. “Now that the criminal cases are moving toward trial, there is something you need to know about why Grant’s family targeted you in the first place.”

I paused, looking up from my laptop. “What do you mean? Grant met me at a tech conference three years ago.”

“It wasn't an accident,” Arthur said softly, opening the folder. He laid out a series of financial documents dated back to 1998.

“Thirty years ago, your grandmother Evelyn owned a regional logistics firm,” Arthur explained. “Her chief financial officer was a young, ambitious man named Dennis Montgomery.”

My heart skipped a beat. “Dennis?”

“Dennis attempted a hostile takeover of your grandmother's firm by forging her signature on property transfers,” Arthur continued. “Evelyn caught him. Instead of putting him in prison—which would have ruined his young family at the time—she fired him, stripped his shares, and forced him into an out-of-court settlement that left him blacklisted in the financial industry.”

I stared at the old documents, my mind spinning. “Dennis harbored a grudge for thirty years...”

“He spent thirty years obsessing over the Vance fortune,” Arthur confirmed. “When Dennis found out you were Evelyn’s sole heir, he engineered Grant’s introduction to you. Grant was instructed to marry you, isolate you from your network, and gradually transfer your grandmother’s trust assets into Montgomery Construction.”

The terrifying depth of their calculation hit me like a physical blow.

My marriage hadn't just been a toxic, abusive relationship. It had been a long-con family heist designed by Dennis, executed by Grant, and cheered on by Elaine.

They hadn't just wanted a quiet, obedient wife. They wanted revenge on Evelyn Vance through her granddaughter.

A cold, sharp smile slowly spread across my face.

“They thought they were carrying out a thirty-year-old vendetta,” I said softly, my fingers tracing the edge of my grandmother’s desk. “They thought I was the weak link in the Vance bloodline.”

“What are you going to do, Clara?” Arthur asked.

“I’m going to make sure the Montgomery name is completely erased from history,” I replied. “Call Detective Ruiz. Tell her we have evidence of a thirty-year conspiracy, racketeering, and planned corporate espionage.”
