Chapter 4 - The Trap Snaps Shut — A Mother’s Fury Unleashed

By midnight, a violent thunderstorm had rolled over the town, heavy rain drumming a chaotic beat against the tin roof.

Elena sat on the edge of her bed, a small canvas bag packed with their documents, a few clothes, and the remaining cash from her cookie tin. Sofía was asleep beside her, worn out by the emotional toll of the day.

Suddenly, the front door crashed open, the sound echoing through the small house over the roar of the thunder.

Heavy, uneven footsteps stumbled into the living room. Arturo was back, and he was drunker and angrier than usual.

"Elena! Get out here!" Arturo roared.

Elena felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. She slipped out of bed, gently kissing Sofía’s forehead. "Stay here, lock the door, and don't come out no matter what," she whispered.

Elena walked into the living room. Arturo was standing there, drenched in rain, his eyes wild. On the table lay the clinic's medical receipt—Elena had dropped it in her rush to pack.

"What is this?" Arturo roared, shaking the crumpled piece of paper in her face. "Pregnant? The girl is pregnant?!"

Elena didn't flinch. The fear that had paralyzed her for years evaporated, replaced by a pure, white-hot fury.

"Yes, Arturo. She is pregnant," Elena said, her voice deadly quiet. "And I know everything. I know about Don Ramiro. I know you sold your own stepdaughter to pay off your pathetic debts."

Arturo froze. For a fraction of a second, panic flashed in his eyes. But it was quickly replaced by a sickening, cruel grin.

"And what are you going to do about it, Elena?" he laughed, stepping closer until he was breathing his alcohol-laden breath into her face. "Who are you going to tell? The police? Don Ramiro owns the police chief. You think anyone in this town will believe a poor, crazy housewife over me and Don Ramiro? You’re nothing. If you say a single word, both you and that little brat will end up buried under the concrete of Ramiro’s new warehouse. Do you hear me?"

He grabbed her by the hair, pulling her head back. Elena gasped in pain, but she didn't weep.

"I'd rather die than let you touch her again," Elena spat directly into his face.

Arturo’s face twisted in rage. He raised his fist, ready to strike her down.

Suddenly, a loud CRACK shattered the tension.

Arturo stiffened. The wild light in his eyes flickered and went out. He slowly turned his head, looking toward the hallway.

Sofía stood there, trembling, holding Arturo’s heavy iron wrench in both hands. She had snuck out of the bedroom when she heard the shouting.

With a low groan, Arturo collapsed to the floor, unconscious, blood trickling from a wound on the back of his head.
