Chapter 6 - The DNA Never Lies — The Final Betrayal That Nobody Saw Coming

When the driver pulled off her hood, Elena gasped.

It was Martha, Arturo’s estranged older sister. Martha had left the town years ago after a bitter falling out with Arturo, and she lived in a small, isolated farmhouse near the state line.

"I knew what he was," Martha said, her hands gripping the steering wheel as she drove down the dark highway. "I knew Arturo was a monster. When I heard he got married and had a stepdaughter, I tried to warn you, Elena, but Arturo blocked my number and threatened to kill me if I ever came near your house. Today, a friend at the clinic called me. They knew what Arturo was capable of and saw you two there. I’ve been looking for you all evening."

Martha took them to her farmhouse, a safe haven hidden deep in the countryside. For the next three weeks, Sofía rested, slowly recovering her physical strength under the care of a trusted, retired midwife Martha knew.

But Elena knew they couldn't hide forever. Don Ramiro’s reach was long, and Arturo was still out there, likely searching for them with a vengeance.

"We need proof," Elena said one evening as they sat around the kitchen table. "If we just go to the state police, Don Ramiro will use his money to bury the case. We need undeniable, scientific proof of what he did to Sofía."

"The DNA," Martha realized, her eyes widening. "The baby. When Sofía gives birth, or... if we get a prenatal DNA test."

"There is a state forensic lab in the capital," Martha continued. "My cousin works there. If we can get a sample from Sofía, and... a sample from Don Ramiro."

"How are we going to get Don Ramiro's DNA?" Elena asked, hopelessness creeping back into her voice.

"We don't need Don Ramiro's DNA," a quiet voice spoke from the doorway.

They turned. Sofía was standing there, her face pale but her eyes filled with a fierce determination Elena had never seen before.

"We don't need Don Ramiro's DNA, Mom. Because Don Ramiro isn't the only one who hurt me."

Elena felt her heart plummet into a dark, bottomless abyss. "What do you mean, Sofía?"

"The second time... Don Ramiro brought someone else with him," Sofía whispered, tears streaming down her face. "A man he called his 'partner.' I didn't know who he was at first. But right before they left, I saw him drop his wallet. I hid it under the mattress. It has his ID inside."

Sofía reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, laminated card.

Elena took it. She looked at the face on the identification card, and her blood ran cold.

It was Chief of Police Hector Vargas—the very man Elena had been planning to go to for help. The entire justice system in their town was built on the defilement of children.
