CHAPTER 3 — THE SIGNATURE THAT BETRAYED HER

Teresa Valdés had faced many enemies in her life.

Businessmen who tried to steal her companies.

Investors who underestimated her.

People who smiled at her while secretly planning her downfall.

But nothing had prepared her for this.

Because the person who had betrayed her was not a stranger.

It was someone who had sat at her family table.

Someone who had hugged her daughter.

Someone who had called her “Mom.”

The call from Emiliano ended.

But his voice remained in Teresa’s mind.

"It’s time we talk about who really owns this clinic."

Those words bothered her.

Not because she was afraid.

Because they didn’t make sense.

Emiliano knew about the foundation.

He knew about the contracts.

But he shouldn’t have known the details.

Only a handful of people had access to those documents.

Her lawyers.

The foundation board.

And...

Teresa stopped.

Her face changed.

“No…”

She whispered.

Because there was only one person who could have given Emiliano that information.

Twelve years earlier, when Teresa created the Santa Regina Foundation, she had trusted a young lawyer named Rafael Mendoza.

Rafael was brilliant.

Honest.

Ambitious.

He helped her build every legal protection around the clinic.

He was there when the first stone was placed.

He was there when the maternity wing opened.

He was the person Teresa trusted when everyone else doubted her.

But over the years, she had noticed something.

Rafael changed.

Small things at first.

A more expensive watch.

A new luxury car.

A sudden interest in powerful people.

But Teresa ignored it.

Because sometimes, when you love and trust someone, you explain away the warning signs.

Until it is too late.

At midnight, Teresa arrived at the foundation’s headquarters.

The building was almost empty.

Only the security lights illuminated the hallways.

She entered the archive room with her personal access card.

Thousands of documents were stored there.

Medical agreements.

Financial records.

Legal protections.

Everything she had built.

She searched for the original foundation contract.

After several minutes, she found it.

She opened the folder.

And her heart sank.

A page was missing.

The page containing the emergency ownership clause.

The clause that allowed her to remove any doctor who endangered patients.

Someone had stolen it.

Someone who knew exactly where to look.

Someone who had access.

Teresa immediately called her lawyer.

“Daniel.”

“Mrs. Valdés?”

“I need you to check Rafael Mendoza’s financial records.”

A pause.

“Rafael?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I think he sold information from the foundation.”

The lawyer became silent.

Then he said:

“Teresa…”

“What?”

“There is something you should know.”

Her stomach tightened.

“What?”

“We found transfers.”

“From whom?”

“An offshore account.”

“And the owner?”

Another pause.

Then:

“Emiliano Aranda.”

For a moment, Teresa couldn’t breathe.

The betrayal was deeper than she imagined.

Emiliano hadn’t discovered her secret.

He had been buying his way into it.

Piece by piece.

Year by year.

Preparing.

Planning.

Waiting.

Meanwhile, at Santa Regina Clinic, Emiliano sat in his office watching security footage.

On the screen was Teresa entering the foundation building.

He smiled.

Not because he was happy.

Because he believed he was winning.

Behind him stood Rafael Mendoza.

The lawyer who had once helped Teresa build her empire.

“You were right,” Rafael said.

“She found the missing documents.”

Emiliano poured himself a drink.

“She was always smart.”

“Are you sure this will work?”

Emiliano looked at him.

“Rafael, do you know why powerful people fall?”

The lawyer said nothing.

“Because they believe loyalty is permanent.”

He smiled.

“Teresa made that mistake with you.”

Rafael lowered his eyes.

For a second, guilt appeared on his face.

But it disappeared quickly.

“How much longer?”

Emiliano looked at the calendar.

“Two weeks.”

“The C-section?”

“Yes.”

“And after?”

Emiliano stared at the screen showing Valeria’s room.

“After the surgery, everyone will believe it was a tragedy.”

Rafael swallowed.

“You’re certain?”

Emiliano’s expression became cold.

“I am a doctor.”

The next morning, Teresa visited Valeria.

But she didn’t tell her everything.

Not yet.

A pregnant woman carrying a baby did not need more fear.

She needed strength.

“How are you feeling?” Teresa asked.

Valeria looked exhausted.

“I’m scared.”

Teresa sat beside her.

“I know.”

“He used to be different.”

Teresa looked at her daughter.

“What do you mean?”

Valeria wiped away a tear.

“When we met, he saved my life.”

Teresa listened.

“I was in an accident. Everyone thought I would lose my leg. Emiliano stayed with me for three days.”

Her voice became softer.

“He was kind.”

Teresa held her hand.

“Sometimes monsters don’t start as monsters.”

Valeria looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“Sometimes they learn how to look human first.”

That afternoon, Teresa received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

"If you want your daughter alive, come alone to the old maternity wing."

Her blood went cold.

She knew that place.

The old wing had been abandoned years ago.

Before the renovation.

Before Santa Regina became famous.

She immediately called her lawyer.

No answer.

She called the prosecutor.

No answer.

Everyone she trusted suddenly disappeared.

Then another message arrived.

This time, with a photo.

A photo of Valeria sleeping in her hospital bed.

Taken minutes earlier.

Teresa’s hands tightened around the phone.

Someone was inside her daughter’s room.

Someone was watching.

She went to the old maternity wing.

Alone.

The hallway smelled of dust and forgotten memories.

The lights flickered.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“You always were stubborn, Teresa.”

She turned.

And froze.

Rafael Mendoza stepped forward.

The man she had trusted for twelve years.

The man who helped build her dream.

The man who betrayed her.

“Rafael…”

He looked ashamed.

But not enough.

“Why?”

That was the only word Teresa could say.

Rafael looked away.

“Because I was tired of being the person behind the curtain.”

“So you sold my daughter’s safety?”

“No.”

“You gave Emiliano access to my foundation.”

“I didn’t know he would go this far.”

Teresa laughed bitterly.

“You helped create a monster and now you’re surprised he became one?”

Rafael lowered his head.

Then he reached into his pocket.

Teresa stepped back.

But instead of a weapon…

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I came here because there’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

Rafael handed it to her.

“Emiliano’s real plan.”

Teresa opened it.

Inside was a surgical schedule.

A list of medications.

And one handwritten note.

Her face turned pale.

Because at the bottom of the page was a signature.

A signature she recognized.

A signature belonging to someone she loved.

Someone she never suspected.
