CHAPTER 4 — THE PERSON WHO SIGNED HER DAUGHTER’S DEATH SENTENCE

Teresa stared at the paper in her hands.

She read the signature once.

Then again.

And a third time.

Because her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

The handwriting.

The initials.

The name.

It belonged to someone she trusted more than anyone.

Someone who had promised to protect her daughter.

Someone who had called her family.

Dr. Rafael Mendoza.

No.

Not Rafael.

Someone else.

Someone whose name was written underneath his.

Someone whose involvement made Teresa’s blood run cold.

VALERIA ARANDA.

Her daughter’s signature.

The woman whose back was covered in bruises.

The woman who had begged her mother for help.

The woman who claimed she was terrified of Emiliano.

Teresa’s fingers began trembling.

“No…”

Rafael watched her carefully.

“She signed it six months ago.”

Teresa looked up sharply.

“That’s impossible.”

“I saw it happen.”

“Why would my daughter sign something like this?”

Rafael looked away.

“Because she didn’t know what she was signing.”

The old maternity wing became silent.

Only the sound of the wind moving through the broken windows could be heard.

Teresa looked back at the document.

“What is this?”

Rafael took a deep breath.

“A consent agreement.”

“For what?”

He hesitated.

Then said:

“For a special surgical procedure.”

Teresa’s eyes narrowed.

“Explain.”

Rafael swallowed.

“Emiliano convinced Valeria that because of complications during pregnancy, she needed additional authorization for the C-section.”

Teresa felt anger rising.

“He lied to her.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped him.”

Rafael lowered his head.

“Yes.”

For twelve years, Teresa had believed Rafael was different.

She believed money had never changed him.

She believed he was the one person who cared about the foundation more than personal gain.

But now she understood.

People didn’t always betray you with a knife.

Sometimes they betrayed you with a pen.

A signature.

A document.

A quiet decision made when nobody was watching.

“Why are you telling me this now?” Teresa asked.

Rafael looked exhausted.

“Because Emiliano is going too far.”

Teresa laughed bitterly.

“Too far?”

Her voice echoed through the abandoned hallway.

“He has been hurting my daughter for months.”

“I know.”

“He threatened her life.”

“I know.”

“He planned something during surgery.”

Rafael closed his eyes.

“I know.”

Teresa stepped closer.

“Then why did you help him?”

For several seconds, Rafael said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Because he had something against me.”

Teresa froze.

“What?”

“My son.”

The words surprised her.

“Your son?”

Rafael nodded.

“Three years ago, my son caused an accident. Someone was seriously injured.”

Teresa stared at him.

“I covered it up.”

“And Emiliano found out.”

“Yes.”

“He threatened to expose you.”

“He said he would destroy my family if I didn’t cooperate.”

Teresa shook her head.

“So you sacrificed my daughter to save yourself?”

Rafael looked ashamed.

“No excuse will make what I did right.”

For the first time, Teresa saw something in his eyes.

Not arrogance.

Not greed.

Regret.

But Teresa had no time for regret.

Her daughter’s life was still in danger.

She folded the documents.

“Where is Emiliano now?”

Rafael looked at his watch.

“At the clinic.”

“Planning the surgery?”

“Yes.”

Teresa turned to leave.

“Teresa.”

She stopped.

“Be careful.”

She looked back.

“Why?”

“Because Emiliano knows you know.”

A cold silence.

“What do you mean?”

Rafael looked toward the entrance.

“He let me give you that file.”

Teresa froze.

“What?”

“He wanted you to find it.”

The realization hit her.

This wasn’t an accident.

It wasn’t a mistake.

It was a trap.

“Why?”

Rafael’s voice became quiet.

“Because Emiliano believes you will come after him.”

“And?”

“He wants you angry.”

Teresa’s expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because he has prepared evidence.”

“What evidence?”

Rafael looked at her.

“Evidence showing you tried to destroy him.”

At that moment, Teresa understood.

Emiliano wasn’t just trying to hurt Valeria.

He was building a story.

A story where he was the victim.

Where Teresa was the powerful woman abusing her influence.

Where he was the innocent doctor attacked by a wealthy mother-in-law.

He had planned every move.

That night, the biggest news channels received an anonymous report.

The headline spread online within minutes.

“FAMOUS DOCTOR ACCUSED OF HARASSMENT BY POWERFUL BUSINESSWOMAN’S FAMILY — EVIDENCE OF CLINIC TAKEOVER ATTEMPT SURFACES.”

Photos appeared everywhere.

Emiliano in his white coat.

Valeria smiling beside him during happier times.

Teresa attending charity events.

The public reaction was immediate.

People began defending Emiliano.

“He’s a respected doctor.”

“She’s trying to destroy his career.”

“She wants control of the clinic.”

The perfect image he built for years was protecting him.

Inside Santa Regina Clinic, Emiliano watched the news with satisfaction.

His assistant entered.

“Doctor, the media is on your side.”

He smiled.

“Of course.”

“Should we proceed with the next step?”

Emiliano looked at the C-section schedule.

“Yes.”

“What about Mrs. Aranda?”

His smile disappeared.

“She will understand something soon.”

“What?”

“That love makes people predictable.”

But Emiliano made one mistake.

He believed Teresa was acting out of emotion.

He believed she was just a mother fighting desperately.

He didn’t know Teresa had spent decades building systems, collecting evidence, and preparing for people exactly like him.

And she had one weapon he didn’t know existed.

A hidden recording.

Earlier that day, before entering the old maternity wing, Teresa had activated a small device in her necklace.

Everything Rafael said had been recorded.

Every confession.

Every detail.

Every name.

And she had already sent a copy to someone Emiliano could never control.

The prosecutor.

At 3:00 a.m., Emiliano received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence:

"Your game is over."

Attached was an audio file.

He played it.

And his face changed.

Because he heard Rafael’s voice.

Confessing everything.

His betrayal.

The documents.

The plan.

Everything.

Emiliano threw the phone against the wall.

For the first time…

The perfect doctor lost control.

“No…”

He whispered.

“No, no, no.”

Then another notification appeared.

This time from the hospital security system.

ACCESS ALERT: OPERATING ROOM FILES DOWNLOADED.

Someone had accessed the surgical records.

Someone had found the final piece of evidence.

Emiliano looked at the screen.

And slowly realized something terrifying.

The person who had exposed him…

Was not Teresa.

Was not Rafael.

Was not the prosecutor.

It was someone inside his own team.

Someone who had been watching him from the beginning.

The next morning, as Valeria prepared for her final appointment before the C-section…

A nurse walked into the room.

Her face was pale.

“Mrs. Aranda…”

Valeria looked up.

“What happened?”

The nurse closed the door.

“I need to tell you something about your husband.”

Valeria’s heart stopped.

“What?”

The nurse whispered:

“Dr. Emiliano didn’t choose you by accident.”

Silence.

“He chose you because of something your family never knew.”

Teresa looked confused.

“What are you talking about?”

The nurse placed a folder on the bed.

Inside was an old adoption record.

A birth certificate.

And a secret that connected Valeria…

May you like

To the one person who could destroy Emiliano completely.
